Sarkozy's quarrel with Obama is political - and personal
The Times Online ^ | April 17, 2009 | Charles Bremner

Nicolas Sarkozy displays a cartoon in his office that helps to explain why he is picking quarrels with Barack Obama. It shows Super Sarko standing between George W. Bush and Mr Obama. The caption reads: “I’ve prepped to be interim master of the world.”

The French President played stand-in statesman during a dynamic turn in the EU’s rotating chair last year. He saw himself giving a paternal hand to the new superpower leader but was then wounded by Mr Obama’s failure to grant his wish of a new Washington-Paris axis.

The new antagonism is personal and strategic. Mr Sarkozy’s alpha-male mix of charm and aggressiveness has not worked with Mr Obama. The American flattered him when they met two weeks ago, but offended him with a double-edged compliment, saying of Mr Sarkozy: “He is courageous on so many fronts, it’s sometimes hard to keep up with him.”

Mr Sarkozy is annoyed by the adulation for an unproven US leader whose stardom has eclipsed his own record as a world troubleshooter. On a deeper level, he has calculated that it makes sense to strike a distance from a superpower discredited by its financial troubles.

Nothing personal here, IMHO.

Sarko is what the French call a flatteur, a seducteur. He loves to flirt and tease, and has a terrific sense of humor.

We know he isn’t jealous of His Barackness’ consort, Aunt Esther.

He just sees Obama for the Socialist empty suit he is. My guess is he knows Obama will go down, and he doesn’t want to go down with a sinking ship, one that doesn’t share his world vision.

Sarko went out of his way, at great political risk, to express his friendship and support of GWB.

The Chirac comparison is misplaced. Another point of disagreement between Sarko and Chirac and Obama is that Sarko is a strong supporter of Israel as a Jewish State with Jerusalem as its capital.

"Sarko has better taste in women.

Personally, I think they're both poor choices in mates. One is a professional rock groupie who has slept with more men than Madonna. And, the other is a retired center for the New York Knicks.

The left dribbling out their muddled support for a man who is not capable of successfully managing a convenience store much less the USA.

Chirac was an old line French politico, he had very little in common with Sarko as they are really from different eras of Europe.

Sarko has a much higher Global profile then Chirac ever did, when he wasn’t bashing the US over Iraq, and the kick backs Saddam was sending him, he was sort of clownish in my view.

Think about this. It takes British media reporting that the leader of FRANCE can see right through this inexperienced rookie. France of all places is trying to remind us that the US deserves a real leader not some sort of poser who had accomplished nothing of substance in his life. Sarkozy seems to understand that the lone superpower is in heap big trouble if this goofball is leading it.
