There has been a lot of outrage over the Department of Homeland Security's leaked summary report on "Rightwing Extremism," but by far its most odious aspects are its implications that military veterans are fertile targets for radical, violent groups and that right-wingers are inclined toward racism.
Information from this April 7 report was provided to law enforcement officials to help them prevent terrorist attacks against the United States.
The "Key Findings" are way light on objective facts but heavy on subjective opinion -- opinion clearly colored by the worldviews and biases of those issuing the report. Right off the bat, DHS admits it "has no specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence, but rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues. The economic downturn and election of the first African American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment."
There's more. "The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks."

Michael Savage announced on his show today that he has filed two lawsuits against the DHS and asks that all of us contact our legislators and DEMAND Janet Napolitano resign as Director of DHS.
How long has the report been in production?
David is right and this woman needs to resign asap.
The reason the DHS, BATFE and other assorted LEOs and agencies are worried is because they know what happened in the Battle of Athens (TN) in 1946. Kicking in the door on crack dealers and the wrong house is pretty easy, but doing so against those who have stood their ground and persevered in actual combat has them pretty scared. That is a typical bully response.
Dr Savage also made a good point that only the non-classified version of the report was leaked. There is a classified version - wonder what that says. He filed a freedom of information act request for that.
No doubt this forum is well monitored by DHS re the alleged rightwing bs.
She would be the first to condemn someone who said all Muslims were like Osama bin Laden.
She would scream racism if anyone dared to imply all blacks were like Willy Horton.
And God forbid if anyone ever said all liberals were like Bill Ayers and his killer terrorist wife. Nope. She would have the wit to know you don't paint large groups with one bad person.
Well, up until you get to the narrow minded hate in her bigoted small heart by painting all conservatives as Tim McVeigh..
Great cartoon. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting that during tonight’s panel discussion on Fox News Special Report I heard for the first time that there was a parallel report warning against leftwing terrorists such as environmentalists (but apparently not anti-war protesters or ACORN thugs beseiging the homes of Wall Street workers) - the MSM sure played up the evil right-wing angle, and as usual ignored what would look bad for the left......
This goes back to Clinton’s “vast right wing conspiracy”. Or are you trying to blame President Bush?
I am asking a question trying to determine who and when this report was commissioned.
Am I wrong for wanting to know the full story?
My prediction is that within a few days, Janet & Co. will rush out a freshly-written report on Greenpeace or some other wacko leftist/enviro-terrorist group saying, “See, we have concerns about the left-wing extremists too.”
All in the hopes of quelling this.
mark. my. words.
Really, isn't it just a bit of a rightwing overreaction to think that a domestic national security agency or apparatus of the US Federal Government, under a Liberal Democrat Administration, would necessarily go overboard and/or deny people liberty on our own soil? C'mon gimme a break!
