Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier is the first Republican to take a formal step toward the Colorado Senate race, launching an exploratory committee on Wednesday.
Frazier made the announcement at a Tea Party rally in Grand Junction.
We have an amazing opportunity to create economic prosperity, reform our government and build a better future, Frazier said, according to a release. I stand before you to do my part.
If he wins the GOP primary, Frazier would likely face appointed Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), who replaced Interior Secretary Ken Salazar (D) in the Senate earlier this year.
Frazier is not the first choice of GOP leaders in Washington, but he brings a compelling profile to the race as a young African-American in a party that is trying to reinvent itself.
Raising money will be a major hurdle for Frazier, and no one will know how hes doing for another three months, when second-quarter reports are due.
Other GOPers to keep an eye on include Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, attorney Dan Caplis and former Rep. Bob Beauprez.

This race has produced a number of surprises already, and election day is nearly two years away.
OK.
I don’t know who this dude is or what he believes in....yet.
However, I think this could be a test of a new method of taking back the GOP. If Ryan Frazer has good conservative ideas, and a good record (even if I don’t agree with him 100%), then it behooves us to support his campaign.
It’s time to cut off the NSRC and the NRC — send your money, and your support, to the candidates (regardless of location) who best represent the (little “r”) republican conservative ideals.

Ryan Frazier.
2/3rds, were you at this rally?
Foreign, I’ve pinged 2/3rds, who is a Freeper of some reknown and also worked valiently to try to stop this fiasco which the US is now facing. He can fill you in on the details about this man. IIRC, 2/3rds has heard this candidate and has liked what he heard. 2/3rds, please correct me if I am wrong.
If Ryan Frazier is the nominee, I’ll support him, but Ken Buck is my first choice among the names mentioned.
I’ve heard him speak before and liked what he had to say.
If Bob Beauprez runs I will never support him. He let go of the 7th so he could run a terrible governor’s campaign. We lost 2 republican races because of him.
To offer a tepid defense of Beauprez, remember that liberal rodent judges didn’t allow the then-majority GOP to impose the Congressional lines that would’ve been more advantageous to us holding the 3rd through 7th districts, and the 7th was made far too marginal (and now Dem-leaning). Beauprez wasn’t responsible for us losing it (unless he was intending to remain in it for the long term), and frankly, I find it’s Bill Owens responsible for us losing the Governorship and the legislature. He left Beauprez a terrible atmosphere to run in.
Hooray Ryan Frazier!!! BTTT!
This Frazier doesn’t sound prominent enough to knockout Bennett.
If I hear anything about him, I will post it to ForeignDude.
Grand Junction - Aurora. They’re both in Colorado. I was close. LOL!
That may be the best recommendation a person could have.
Couldn't agree more. Owen's actions over our Senate candidate and Ref C&D split the party wide open going into the general.
Bennet may not even make it out of the primary, so Frazier (if he gets the nod) may be facing someone else.
