Veterans Group Sends Letter of Protest to Homeland Security Department
Wednesday, April 15, 2009, By Susan Jones, Senior Editor
(CNSNews.com) The American Legion is among the groups protesting a Homeland Security report apparently written by a career bureaucrat that says current economic and political conditions may give rise to right-wing extremists.
The report, dated April 7, warns that an extended economic downturn along with the election of the nations first black president could make it easier for rightwing extremists to recruit new members, although the report offers no evidence that such a thing is actually happening.
American Legion National Commander David K. Rehbein singled out the following sentence as particularly objectionable because it suggests that veterans are more likely than non-veterans to commit terrorist acts:
The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Rehbein wrote that the American Legion shares the departments concern about white supremacist and anti-government groups.
He also complained that the report is incomplete and lacks statistical evidence:
The American Legion is well aware and horrified at the pain inflicted during the Oklahoma City bombing, but Timothy McVeigh was only one of more than 42 million veterans who have worn this nation's uniform during wartime. To continue to use McVeigh as an example of the stereotypical disgruntled military veteran is as unfair as using Osama bin Laden as the sole example of Islam, Rehbein wrote.
The DHS report also states, Rightwing extremists were concerned during the 1990s with the perception that illegal immigrants were taking away American jobs through their willingness to work at significantly lower wages.
Rehbein asked Napolitano, Would you categorize union members as Right Wing Extremists?
The report is incomplete and politically biased, Rehbein wrote: I think it is important for all of us to remember that Americans are not the enemy. The terrorists are, he concluded.
The report cites the April 4 killings of three Pittsburgh police officers as an example of the type of violence spurred by right-wing rhetoric.
In that Pittsburgh case, a 23-year-old man opened fire on police who came to his house in response to a 911 call from his mother. The woman told police her son was collecting guns and ammunition because he believed that as a result of economic collapse, the police were no longer able to protect society," an affidavit said.
People who knew the suspect said he was worried about his weapons being seized during the anti-gun Obama administration.
Homeland Security spokesman Sean Smith told the Associated Press the report is one in a series of assessments issued by the agency's intelligence and analysis unit. The agency describes these assessments as part of an effort "to facilitate a greater understanding of the phenomenon of violent radicalization in the United States."

Any concern about black street thugs?
Hispanic gangs ala M16?
Asian organized crime?
Mariner, thought you may want to look. It’s clear that vets will not be slimed by Homeland Security.
Yet the young black man who killed I believe 3 cops in California was hailed as a hero in his community, for standing up against what they believe is unfair justice against there race! Could he be considered a Left-wing extremist? No...of course not, Obama and his ilk probably think he is a hero too.
It isn't the willingness of Illegals to work for significantly lower wages that's the problem.
It's their unfair ability to do so. They aren't paying taxes. This is a parasitic advantage - its not as if Americans can work at the same wages and still make ends meet.
This aspect didn’t get as much discussion on talk radio yesterday.
Those who put their lives on the line for this country are now being called anti-American and seditious and LEOs are being warned that they could pose a “threat”.
Meanwhile soldiers who went AWOL or posed as combat soldiers who engaged in TREASON by slurring the military as war criminals (claiming to have witnessed and participated in war crimes when in truth they were not deployed, if they served at all) are still championed by the Left, then (Vietnam) as now (Iraq).
They also wire billions of dollars home and “qualify” for living assistance. If they are poor, it is because they willingly “do without” by sending good money out of the country.
“Right Wing Extremists” is code for ‘white people.’ Why is the article ignoring the inclusion of, and correlation to, white supremist groups? Because that is what the report says.
Just look around. There are bands of white people everywhere you look and they’re committing domestic terrorism by blowing up buildings, beheading people and flying planes into buildings-—almost daily. It’s an epidemic and whitey must be stopped!
Making stupid accusations like this is not supposed to be divisive.?????????????
This womans brains must be in her very large posterior.
Eradicate Left Wing Extremists in Office! Vote them out of office!
Ping!
