"So, did Obama just make more pirates by killing those pirates? Isn’t that the mantra on the left about terrorists?"

Quaqmire, Obama's fault!!!

Why is it that mercantile ships are not allowed to be armed?

Because of the fear of armed mutiny by the crew and because of the problems with bringing arms into many of their ports of call. Try taking guns into Mexico for instance..

That’s gotta be close to a total of 20 ships hijacked & 200 hostages...

Yep they have been busy. According to a Bloomberg article of April 11 the pirates have been a busy bunch. This is going to take a concerted effort amongst the many nations to patrol this region and put an end to this crap....

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aSlanT6acaCU&refer=home
A total of 165 ships were attacked last year by Somali pirates with 43 vessels hijacked, peaking at 10 in November alone, according to the French Navy. The pirates still hold 16 ships with about 200 crew members, according to the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

I think it's an insurance matter. Unbelievable as it sounds, insurance companies don't want arms on the cargo ships. Maybe as these pirate incidents increase, they'll change their policy on this (no pun intended).

Didn’t anyone in DeeCee, the DOD, shipping companies, NOT see this coming after the rescue? It’s not like we don’t have assets in the area.

If the shipping companies are too stupid to have armed guards protect their ships, then let ‘em get hijacked.

It is similar to the gun-free zones the pc libs insist on. And they, also, are too stupid to realize that that just makes it easy pickin's for the bad guys.

AK-47 vs Water cannon? That brings to mind Zell Miller's accusation that John Kerry and the libs would use spitballs to deter terrorism (because, per Kerry, it is just a law enforcement matter).

someone could put two ships in the ocean

You wouldn't have to even use ships. It seems a company could legally have an office in each port city that is authorized by the host country to keep and maintain weapons. They could send a launch out to the merchant ship upon departure to supply the vessel and then retrieve them by launch from the destination port as they arrive.

Anyone want to start a new enterprise?

Sink their ships (boats) and hang the survivors.

How would you seperate the pirates from the non-pirates on land?

All of this will change when the insurance companies realize the risk of arms on board is less costly than losing ship after ship. Lloyd’s drew the same conclusion in the early 18th century. Ah, a lesson lost to time..

Insurance companies, cowed by personal injury lawyers, are a big part of the problem. There is also the Law of the Seas Treaty and Leftist international courts to consider.

Time to blow these guys right out of their boats when sighted -- that's right Att'y. Gen. Holder, without reading them their "rights."

Their "rights" consist of resistance from their would-be victims - with violence!!!

The insurer of the workers is not necessarily the same as the insurer of the ship.

And a Michael Moore screaming:

“We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times.

We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president with a fictitious birth certificate.

We live in a time where we have a man sending us to fight pirates for fictitious reasons.

We live in a time where we have a man bailing out fictitious banking emergences for fictitious reasons.

Whether it’s the fictition of bailouts or fictition of G20 sovergnty we are against this bailout, Mr. Obama.

Shame on you, Mr. Obama, shame on you. “

Yeah, but I’m thinking that the need right now is only for Somalia. I think there might be some operating near Thailand or other southeast asian areas.

That’s why I was thinking ships. But you could do it with your idea of launching from nearby ports. I think an office in every port is overkill right now, but it might get to that.

What the navy and coast guard need to cover vast areas of the ocean are some radar blimps. Then various navies on anti-piracy patrols should stop every small boat over 100 miles from shore, and inspect them for weapons. Any boats that resist boarding should be destroyed.
