Crimes are going unsolved in Charlotte because immigrants again don't feel safe reporting them, police say.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief Rodney Monroe, as part of his 2009 strategic plan, has launched a campaign to repair what he calls the damaged relationship between the two groups.
The relationship began to crumble in 2006 due to increased immigration enforcement.

Swell.
I need a drink.
If illegals no longer feel safe they should return home.
Next headline. “Police seek to regain trust of Robbers and murderers”
the magic word is “try” (to regain trust). Like, “I’ll try to trust Somali pirates when I have a million dollars in cash”.
Law enforcement can’t enforce the laws of the land because it ruins relations between the enforcers and those being enforced against. The same can be said for law enforcement and drug dealers/users. When law enforcement starts busting drug users, people tend to clam up. It makes sense to me. Don’t bust the illegals, if you want them to have friendly relations with you.
Cities like Los Angeles have over a million illegals. For decades the policy was for the police not to bother them with immigration enforcement, in order that they would feel free to interact with the police and courts. Immigration enforcement was left up to the feds.
Now, with that policy ended, there is a sub-culture of a million people who fear contacting the police. The result is not fewer immigrants, but a hidden city within a city whose populace can’t testify against crimes, can’t report crimes to police, and shuns law enforcement.
This is a good step on the way to turning a united city into a place with fiefdoms (Beirut, anyone?)
It’s up to the feds to control the border AT THE BORDER.
It shouldn’t (and CAN’T) be the job of city police to try and fix the fed’s mistakes.
OMG does the police chief try to regain trust of speeders, or jay walkers, litters, or any other group,
Send the criminal sons a bitches home and have a pen pal relationship. Better yet if you love them so much go with them. They don’t belong here! If crime is the only thing sending them home then I want to donate a box of 9mm to the local homies.
So how did that turn out?
Cities like Los Angeles have over a million illegals.
Oh, right.
Well I guess it works out pretty well if you live in a gated community and own a landscaping business.
You make some good points, but, as a former Angelino, I’d like to make some counter points. You point out that illegals may be less likely to testify or report crimes. What indication is there that those who make up the majority of illegals were ever going to be on the lookout against crime anyway?
As an example: the last time I was in Mexico, I parked my car (it was an old beater; I’m not insane) for 30 minutes on a busy street, in front of a number of open businesses, in the middle of the day, while I went to get some souvenirs. When I came out, one of the car windows had been smashed, and a bunch of junk from the back seat had been stolen (really; junk. They took some empty CD cases, a pair of used, worn-out shoes, and a ratty jacket). This had obviously been in full view of store owners and passers by -— and yet no one saw anything. This was in Mexico, so the locals had no fear of deportation. They just didn’t care to help someone who’d just been vandalized and robbed.
People like that were never, I believe, ever going to be law-abiding pillars of the community just because they crossed the border into LA. So, why help them stay? If the feds missed them at the border, that doesn’t mean they should get a free pass from there on in.
You mention the fear of turning LA into Beirut. If you really want to reduce the risk of having isolated enclaves in LA, then the most straightforward thing to do is to move those enclaves back to their country of origin. If they want to recreate Beirut, they should feel free to do so in their home countries.
That certainly does not mean that people who come here, and eschew separatism, should not be welcomed. Those who come here and play by the rules are one thing. Those who break the rules by coming here, then further refuse to integrate by not cooperating with our civil structures (police, etc) really should just go.
Simple. Send all the illegals back home and you’ve eliminated the problem.
F ‘em.
Ping!
The newspaper means illegal aliens. Probably just a mistake that they refer to them as immigrants.
Regrettably, you’re probably right. Its more important to deal with violent criminals than it is to deport otherwise law-abiding illegal aliens.
Still, I’d like to see the illegals gone, too.
Nonsense. The correct policy is what Sheriff Joe is doing. He doesn’t go looking for illegal aliens on street corners, but if someone is arrested, it’s common sense to check their immigration status, and turn them over to ICE for deportation if they’re not here legally.
Then the message to illegals is simply: don’t get arrested.
I said “otherwise law-abiding.” In other words, they’re here illegally, but don’t make a living through crime.
Hopefully one of them doesn’t use your social security number to work or will it be, other than being in the country illegally and committing identity fraud otherwise law-abiding illegal aliens?
