When it comes to church, President Obama can't avoid trouble.
As the First Family attended an Easter Sunday service at St. John's Church across from the White House Sunday, the Rev. Luis Leon unleashed a vicious and unholy attack on New York.
He insulted the Yankees.
With the Obamas sitting in the sixth row, Leon told congregants that "baseball season has started" and that the church's drummer is a huge Yankees fan.
Leon then said he wanted to remind everybody that the Orioles have beaten the Yankees twice so far, and therefore, "The world lives in hope."
"I'm a fairly charitable person," the good reverend said, "but I have to tell you - I hate the Yankees."
Laughter erupted from the pews. It was unclear whether the Obamas joined in.
White House spokesman Bill Burton did not respond last night to the Daily News' urgent inquiry into this matter.
Last year, Obama publicly split from his longtime pastor and friend, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and the family is still searching for a new spiritual home.
New York's leaders defended their team with pride.
Stu Loeser, Mayor Bloomberg's press secretary, said, "We checked with a religious authority here in New York, and on this specific area of belief, Mayor Bloomberg's rabbi assures us that President Obama's minister is mistaken."
Former Mayor Ed Koch said, "When I see the Yankees attacked, the hairs on the nape of my neck go up, and the guy who attacks them is lucky if I don't hit him and then run."
Uh
And what does this have to do with the Easter Sermon?
Jesus is an Orioles fan.
He was just sucking up.
“the churches drummer”,,,
You either love the Yankees or hate them so no big deal.
Who cares?
Plus we all know the Yankees are the better team and the Orioles and Red Sux just get lucky every few years.
Umm. Hope? You know, the real kind of Hope.
Not the fake kind that causes people to go on shooting rampages when they figure out that the “messiah” who was going to pay their mortgages, get them a job, etc. is a false one.
FYI, most of us out here hate the Yankees, except for New York ex-pats. Sheesh, "Damn Yankees" was even a Broadway hit.
Jesus is an Orioles fan.
Jesus let the greatest player in the history of professional sports leave the Baltimore Orioles and then the Boston Red Sox to go play for the NY Yankees. On average, His team has won the World Series every three years since that happened.
I grew up in Georgia, and I was 11 years old before I knew that "Damn Yankees" was TWO words...
If I was an Orioles fan, I'd hate losing a lot more than the Yankees, and I'd demand that Peter Angelos do something about it. Actually, they look like they're starting to get their act together. A lot of people think they're going to be the Rays in two or three years.
Can anyone name the theme of one single sermon preached by Rev. Leon in the past 8 years during the time President Bush regularly attended?
Is baseball a normal Easter topic at this church?
LOL!
When did Gretzky play baseball?
I'm afraid we're a pitcher or two short of getting it done again this year.
Then he will be glad to know that my Kansas City Royals put three runs across in the 8th and beat the Yankees 6 to 4 in Easter Sunday's game.
And as a White Sox fan, I doubt Obama was upset to begin wiht.
This is nonsense, of course. As has been noted by that great theologian Thomas Lasorda, God is a Dodger fan.
Now that is just freaky!
[the Lord *does* move in mysterious ways]
