EDITORIAL: 'We want them registered'--Democrats are going after guns
The Washington Times ^ | April 13, 2009 | Editorial

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, announced last week that she wants to register guns. Her next move will be to try to confiscate them.

The speaker picked a television show with a viewership of 4.6 million to float the Democrats' coming gun-control push. Questioned on ABC's "Good Morning America" about the prospect of new gun-control laws now that "it's a Democratic president, a Democratic House," she responded, "We don't want to take their guns away. We want them registered."

Politicians and bureaucrats routinely claim that registration helps solve crimes. If a registered gun is used in a crime and left at the crime scene, registration supposedly lets the police trace the gun back to the criminal. Though this turn of events might work on fictional TV crime shows, it virtually never occurs in real life. Criminals' guns are rarely left at crime scenes. When guns are left behind, it usually is because a crook has been seriously injured or killed and the police are poised to catch him anyway.

The few guns left at crime scenes rarely - if ever - are registered to the perpetrator. If they are registered at all, it is to someone else, whose piece was stolen. Despite what Mrs. Pelosi might think, those who use guns to commit major crimes such as robbing and killing are unlikely to respect her request to file paperwork so the government can catalog the tools of their trade.

Numerous examples disprove gun-control propaganda. Hawaii has had licensing and registration of guns for about 50 years.

Too bad they don’t go after illegal aliens with the same kind of zeal.

Federal Firearms Licensed dealers have to have a form 4473 filled out to complete the transfer of a firearm.

What is included on the form:
Name:Last, First Middle
Address
State
County
Zip
Place of birth:City/State
Height.
Weight
Sex
Birth date
SS#(optional)
Race.
Answer 12 questions Yes/No
State of Residence.
Country of Citizenship
Signature and Date.

What is communicated to NICS(National Instant Check System)
Name: Last, First, Middle
Place of birth:City/State
Height.
Weight
Sex
Birth date
SS#(optional)

State of Residence.
Country of Citizenship
Type of Firearm(Handgun, Long gun, Other)

THAT IS ALL the information the FBI gets. Nothing else.....what the weapon is, or type, or caliber.

What is the responsibility of the FFL Dealer:

Any attempt at confiscation will prove “toxic” beyond their imagination. Nancy Pelosi would do well to consider what happened to all that ammunition that has vanished from the stores.

Current California law states that private party gun sales must be conducted through a Calif.licensed firearms dealer. (Kali does not recognize FFL’s)
If you don’t and you ventilate a perp with your gun, you will have a law problem. Probably the confiscation of your gun...

First take the Basic Personal Protection in the Home course given by Certified NRA Instructors. You will learn a lot about gun safety, the laws and how they apply. It’s an all day course beginning in the morning and culminating at the end of the day out on a target range for practice.

Why should the criminals have the guns? They don’t take the courses...they buy guns or steal them for their own use and it’s usually to harm, rob or hurt someone who can’t defend themselves. It’s not right...never has been and never will be.

All the hollywood types have bodyguards. They have their protection. All the politicians are protected as well. Seems everyone is protected except the average citizen. Well, we have a right to protect ourselves and our families and our homes and we plan to do just that.

Using a firearm should always be your last resort but...knowing you have something to defend your life and limb instills confidence and security knowing it is up to you and you alone to protect yourselves against those who just don’t care about harming you.

So, before you purchase a firearm...take the course and speak to the Instructors about which might be the best for you. Check it out with Certified Instructors from the NRA. You will feel much better after taking the course because they emphasize safety and safe gun handling from the get go. They emphasize a lot of things that are helpful and make sense.

So, if you want to purchase...do it the right way. You will be glad you did and you will come away with more knowlege than you ever knew existed regarding firearms and firearm safety and the laws pertaining to them.

If you buy from a licensed dealer, whether at a store or gun show or at the dealers house, you fill out federal Form 4474 which has your ID and address information, plus a series of questions in which you affirm that you are not a felon, doper, under indictment, not buying for someone else, and other things, these are legal statements subject to perjury.

Plus you must pass a NICS check, done by phone, they are not supposed to keep that data.

One copy of the 4474 stays at the dealer and one copy gets mailed to the feds, another to the state.

Some states have their own license and registration laws that may mean more forms, or even a license to buy/own certain guns.

The data on the 4474 is not to be used for registration of the gun, that’s the law.

I think you can find copies of the 4474 online.

As I said before, some states have registration or license laws you should know about before you buy.

The whole process is not difficult (though many feel it to be unconstitutional infringement), it’s set up for commerce after all.

In a state with no registration or license or other bravo sierra, if you buy from a private individual you haggle over the price and pay it. The individual seller may (if he’s smart) record your DL info or other info and keep it in case there is some problem later.

Check this whole process out for yourself, I may have missed something important.

I have heard that gun control issues are usually very toxic from a political perspective—I’m surprised that Pelosi would try this.

I think Pelosi and Reed believe they have reached a critical mass of control of the levers of power and Leftist Foot soldiers (ACORN) to achieve the movement the US from representative democracy to single party oligarchy.

Consider the actions recently; the stimulus package that gave billions to ACORN the plan to use ACORN in the census.

These actions and others are typical moves of a Fascist party to consolidate power.

They are using the resources of the state to aid their party allies who in turn use those resources to build the party.

No record of a private sale is necessary, as far as I know, in any state.

Yep, sold all mine to some guy with a beard wearing a camo hat.

“Current California Law” is an abomination (or is that “Obama Nation?) with respect to gun rights. One of the greatest fears I have is that California emmigrants will bring their draconian laws with them.

We would buy from a gun store dealer, etc. We do not know to many people here where we live that would sell us guns, nor do I think my husband would want to go that route. But, thanks for the information.

“Guns? Gun registration? What guns? I never had one or would I own any of those dangerous things.”

Gordon Liddy:

Caller: Mr. Liddy, you're always talking about guns....but, Mr. Liddy, you're a convicted fellon....so how can you own guns?

Liddy: I don't own any guns....but my wife has one Hell of a collection!!!

I just did a cursory check- here in CA, no record.

But in gun-friendly Massachusetts, you must fill out an FA-10 form and submit it for registration for all gun transactions private or not.

I don’t know about the other 55 states, though.
