SOMALI pirates have threatened revenge after two separate hostage-rescue raids by foreign forces killed at least five comrades, raising fears of future bloodshed on the high seas. The latest raid by US forces this morning saved American hostage Capt Richard Phillips. Three pirates were killed and one was taken captive, the US Navy said.
That rescue mission and one by France last week have upped the stakes in shipping lanes off the anarchic Horn of Africa nation where pirate gangs have defied foreign naval patrols.
"The French and the Americans will regret starting this killing. We do not kill, but take only ransom. We shall do something to anyone we see as French or American from now," Hussein, a pirate, told Reuters by satellite phone.
"We cannot know how or whether our friends on the lifeboat died, but this will not stop us from hijacking," he said.
Sea gangs generally treat their captives well, hoping to fetch top dollar in ransoms. The worst violence has been an occasional beating.

What do they do when somebody ignores the gun they are holding?
Holding a gun to an innocent person's head and demanding ransom for their life seems to be pushing the scope of well treated in my humble opionion.
But apparantly the great mind who wrote this masterful work of journalism knows better than a peon like me.
Declare War
On Fox News today they were talking about the general availability of a substance called khat. It’s a drug made from the bark of an evergreen tree that grows in that part of the world. The natives of Somalia chew it and instantly get high. It’s like methamphetamine. They lose all fear. The warlords give this stuff to their guards. Many of the pirates have this stuff too. It does complicate the situation.
I thought that these poor fellows were to be termed “Multi-cultural enactors.” I am so confused!
I must have missed that.
Who called cop killers “their HERO?”
Q Ships. Used by the Allies in WW I against U-boats. Used by the Germans as commerce raiders in WW! & II: MOEWE, SEEADLER, ATLANTIS, PINGUIN, THOR, KORMORANT, etc]
Shame on all of us! And here we thought that zero B HUSSEIN 0booooombi wasn't intimately involved in the negotiations. Sarc/
.
Could you give a link to where Napolitano called these pirates "man-caused disaster makers?
My brother the Obamaton would be shocked to hear that!
Some idiotic US Navy vice-admiral stated that shooting pirates would “increase the violence”! I don’t see what’s bad about increasing the violence against terrorists.
You are on a similar track. I think that the Filipinos are getting a bum rap.
I hope this doesn’t dampen enthusiasm for “Speak Like a Pirate Day”!
Part of their planning will be the knowledge that we didn’t really get serious til day five.
A few B-52 sorties will shut them up. Unfortunately, it’s against the rules for muslims to kill their own, so Soetoro won’t do it.
“YES! We get a mulligan on this shot. We shot 75%. We can do better next time.”
The Maersk crew should get at least an additional 10% for the stab to the hand of the 4th pirate which got him into the hands of the ship’s doctor (and out of the lifeboat).
Oh geez, now you’ve done it...
Can someone mock up a picture of “Lootie as Somali Pirate” ??
I need to see it!! It’s been too long since Lootie made his last appearance!!
AF B: the terminology predates the piracy incident: Ms Napoleoneato told us a few weeks ago that the old-speak “terrorism” is replaced with “man-caused disaster” here’s a link to analysis:
http://www.ihatethemedia.com/obama-homeland-security-secretary-janet-napolitano-terrorism-is-now-a-man-caused-disaster
Regrettably there is no new term for female terrorism so I guess the women are still to be terrorists until another term is approved.
Ms. N did not weigh in on a term for this particular group of criminals, keeping radio silence about the Maersk with the entire Obowma administration as far as I can tell - they are like a deer in the headlights. Thank God for Navy Seals.
Lets face it the Pirates haven’t done anything since 1979.
Thanks.
I figured you were lying about that. Truth is better than lies.
Keep that in mind.
Thank God for the Navy Seals who made this rescue possible.
