Wait for the USS Boxer
Vanity | 12 April, 2009 | Mariner

I read much saber rattling concerning the current hostage crises.

Remember, a Destroyer or Frigate only have the capability to sink ships and submarines...and to shoot planes and missile out of the sky.

They do not have SEAL teams...nor even snipers...onboard. They have the ship's weapons and small arms, usually shotguns and pistols.

Until the USS Boxer arrives on the scene, the Navy does not have the ability to even ATTEMPT a rescue.

However, I'm pretty darn sure that lifeboat will not reach the beach, no matter what...

One word: “Helicopter”.

They could have flown a SEAL team in within hours. Don’t need to wait for the Boxer.

You see no problem with having to use a 60,000 ton LPH and 3,500 men to stop a 1/2 ton lifeboat?

The bainbridge did not have any helos just drones. A normal fit for a burke class is two sh60 helos.

The Frigate and Destroyer can land a small helicopter, but it would take several trips to get a SEAL team and their supporting, specialized equipment aboard.

I'm fairly certain you could not hoist and land a mini-sub on either, much less launch it.

Too simply drop SEALS with small arms in the water near the lifeboat will do little besides get them shot.

If that lifeboat reaches the shore with the Captain still aboard, Obama needs to be impeached.

This has gone on long enough. Pray for the Captain that he will remain strong and focussed.

Unlike his CIC.

You might be right. I have no doubt that the USN can resolve this particular incident, I have a lot of doubt about the political will of Obama to resolve it.

I am more worried about the longer term. The only way to deal with pirates is to attack their land bases and wipe out their resources. Sink their boats. Wreck their docks. Demolish their houses. Hang the perps after a drumhead court martial. Kill their relatives, their goats, people they have lent money to, relatives of the people they lent money to, everyone who is even tangentially involved in this.

You don’t think a SEAL team can be inserted by helicopter? Even a submarine, which is what I would probably opt for, at night.

Barry O’s just like every other left-winger in America. They are willing to use the US military so long as it doesn’t advance America’s interest or protect her citizens or her security.

Oh, gosh, I hope liberals don’t get the wrong idea that the USS Boxer is named after Barbara.

Either we're going to attempt to rescue this Captain or we're going to kill him.

I believe that's the limit of choices until the Boxer arrives.

Once the Boxer is within a couple of hundred miles, every conceivable option is on the table. They have every possible tactical system aboard.

I heard there was an 18 man security detail put on the Maersk Alabama for her to continue to her destination - also heard these were Navy SEALS - is that incorrect?

Navy Seals can be located any place they want. They could have been placed on the destroyer prior to its arrival on site. Special Ops can accomplish much more than the average person is aware of.

Navy SEALs are supposed to be able to deploy anywhere in the world on a moment's notice, by sea, air, or land. There's really no excuse for them to not be aboard the Bainbridge at this point, even though don't I don't think that's the case.

Great Post!

I would add only, "give me Perikardis alive or Razouli dead!"

I would like to see the Seals attach a line to the underside of the lifeboat and then tow it away from shore

Under cover of darkness the seals could then do their thing

The President seems to be making several Carter-like mistakes, including having this play out on television and letting the press mold public opinion by being able to cover each little event. He should have asked the military for options and then chosen one and proceeded

He seems to still be in campaign mode rather than acting in the best interest of the United States. He appears to be frozen and waiting for public opinion polls.

Achh! Where are the adults in this administration?
