A national movement has sparked the Central Coast Patriots, a Valley-based group, to organize a tax protest at Alameda Park in Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 15.
On the deadline day for filing tax returns, protesters will also be marching to the Internal Revenue Service office on Anacapa Street to rally against government spending and bailouts.
Participants are also asked to bring canned goods to be donated to People Helping People, based in Solvang, said organizer Karen Jones.
This protest will peacefully demonstrate to our governmental powers, from City Council to the president, the number of people who are dissatisfied with how our country has been run, Jones said.
Jones said she joined the protest at the request of Valley residents Terry Kaslow and Kathy Heringer, who started the Central Coast Patriots (CCP).
After a call by CNBCs Rick Santelli for a Chicago Tea Party, groups including DontGo Movement (www.dontgomovement.com), Smart Girl Politics (www.smartgirlpolitics.ning.com), and tcot (www.topconservativesontwitter.org), worked together to organize approximately 50 protests across the nation on Feb. 27, which more than 30,000 people attended.
Building on that protest, the word went out from those sponsors about organizing Tax Day Tea Parties, and asking for volunteers in every city in the United States to form rallies called Nationwide Tax Day Tea Parties reminiscent of the Boston Tea Party in 1773, when the Sons of Liberty protested taxation by the British government.
Many people have asked us why we are doing these tea parties. The reality is, that its merely a step in the right direction in the war against tyranny, socialism and an out of control, arrogant government, Heringer said.
The event isnt about being right or left side of the political spectrum, but a grassroots movement to have a voice and speak up about whats going on, Jones added.
The protest will also feature Justin Tevis, a 2001 Santa Ynez Valley Union High School graduate, who will be speaking about the need for more transparency in government, for elected officials to act on the will of people rather than the demands of interest groups, and for every American citizen to be more involved in what government is doing.
Tevis graduated with a degree in international relations and history from Claremont McKenna College in Los Angeles in 2005 and now lives in Santa Barbara.
This event should be really upbeat and positive. The purpose of the protest isnt an attack on any party. We want it to be non-partisan and just have everyone get excited about being American and bringing back our core values of liberty and free speech, Tevis said.

Similar tax protests will be held across the country on April 15. On the Central Coast, they include one at 5:30 p.m. in the Mervyns parking lot at Broadway and Cook Street in Santa Maria. Other protests are planned for noon at 6907 El Camino Real in Atascadero and at 800 S. Victoria Ave. in Ventura.

For those wanting to protest, please join us in Santa Maria at 5:30 pm in the parking lot of Mervyns (now closed) at the northwest corner of Cook and Broadway on April 15th.
After the protest, come have a great Mexican food dinner at the El Paraiso Restaurant...ask for Gus, the owner.
Oh, yes bring a friend and a sign to Santa Maria.
We plan on talking about the Fair Tax at our Tax Day Tea Party mentioned in the article. I am with you all the way and am a long time Fair Tax gal.
Good luck to our neighbors in Santa Maria. As one of the organizers of our event I probably won't be able to make it up to Santa Maria although theoretically there is time to go to both. Ours starts at 1 PM and yours doesn't start until 5:30 PM. Lunch in Santa Barbara, dinner in Santa Maria, home in bed by 9 PM. Perfect.
