Authorities say a Marrero man shot three pit bulls that were attacking his dog Thursday afternoon.
The 26-year-old man, who as not been identified, will not face any charges, according to Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of Pritchard Drive, Fortunato said. The man's girlfriend told him three pit bulls had made their way into the backyard of the couple's residence and were mauling his terrier.
The man wasn't able to scare off the dogs and eventually felt threatened by them, Fortunato said. He then shot at the three pit bulls with a handgun. All three were hit, but only two were killed. The third ran away, Fortunato said.
The terrier was taken to a veterinarian. No word was available on its condition.

I heard on the radio that the Terrier could not be saved. Too bad but at least this man got rid of a problem that had been plaguing this neighborhood. I heard on the radio that this was not the first dog these pit bulls killed.

This is one of the few circumstances in which I support people shooting dogs. I would never harm a dog unless it was hurting mine. At that point, it becomes basically any weapon at my disposal. And I wouldn’t have much time, as my dog is about as tiny as they come.

I'm not familiar with this neighborhood but from what was said on the radio this man will be a hero to some as these dogs were a nuisance.

Now he has to worry about the dogs owners looking for payback, which seems the standard M.O. of many violent dog owners.
I hope the police interview the pit bulls owners and make it clear that they will be the first ones arrested if any retaliation occurs.

He then shot at the three pit bulls with a handgun. As Meatloaf says, "2 out of 3 ain't bad." But next time, use a 12 guage!

I hope he remembers that his handgun will work just as well against violent, out of control HUMAN attackers as it did against violent dogs.

I agree completely.
Of course anyone who draws and hits three pits with his handgun hopefully will make the idiot owners think twice before they think of escalate things.
Of course some of the idiots out there see that as a challenge to their “rep” and will act accordingly...

A 12 guage with OO buck shot. At that range, anything would work. There would just be a pile of fur with a hole in it.

It’s a shame his pup didn’t make it. Dogs attacking my Lab would suffer the same fate as these 3. And if my baby had to be put to sleep, their owners would be in real trouble too.

from the reports: ...man's girlfriend told him three pit bulls had made their way into the backyard of the couple's residence and were mauling his terrierAnd what was the particular "terrier" breed he was leading? Bedlington, Bullterrier? Airedale? Staffordshire? Maybe American Staffordshire? (all of which won't backdown from a fight, and some of which have been confused as so-called "pitbulls" too!)

AND the wrath of blood thirsty dog’s owners that lurk about FR. IMHO, any dog, I mean ANY dog that is allowed to run loose is fair target practice. Of course the “killer” dog breeds should be first on the list.

"not when they trash his home when he is out!"
Apparently, he took action instead of being mouthy, cowardly and trashy, like his adversaries. His non-pit-bull-owning neighbors will speak/hush for him, and the criminals would probably be better off leaving his stuff alone.
