I read somewhere that Democrats calculated in 1994 that fully half of the 54 seats they lost were directly related to the assault weapons ban - they polled that they would not have lost half of those seats, and control of the House, if it were not for that one issue.

I will be surprise if they bring this up before the 2010 elections.

That said, elections matter. The last 2 election cycles have embolden the Marxists and is coaxing their agenda from the shadows. The more these people feel their oats, the more 2010 will matter.

Conservative ideas are better for America. There’s a REASON why these people shun accurately descriptive terms like liberal and socialist and run as “moderates” and “independents”.

It may be premature to consider such things at this moment, but your line of questioning is essentially correct: how far are we willing to let our own government go in denying rights recognized (not "granted") under our Constitution to all Americans?

The answer to this question in part depends upon how far the government is willing to push the matter and what legal recourse we still have through the ballot box and the jury box.

Either way, organized resistance is going to be necessary, with the preferred model that of Dr. King: nonviolent protest accompanied by legal challenge by institutions and individuals dedicated to our cause. But - and this is crucial - we must always reserve the right to act in defense of our own freedoms, as did our forefathers, when and if our leaders no longer represent us, but pretend to rule us.

Somebody brought up a point I didn't even think about. These gun bans a great for Pelosi and Obama but can do nothing but hurt other Democrats reelection chances in 2010. Those Dems would even have many of their own voting against then if they supported a ban. Not to mention they could activate the largest voting block out there, the apathetic who don't vote. However, they are also trying to coordinate having the second amendment march on the same day in capitols and towns across the country for people who can't make it to DC.
