U.S. Navy Arrives on Scene of Hijacked American Ship
Fox News ^ | 4/8/2009

The U.S. is closing in on pirates that hijacked a U.S.-flagged ship off the coast of Somalia. According to a spokesman for the owner of the Maersk Alabama, which had been hijacked by pirates before American crew members were able to regain control of the vessel Wednesday, a U.S. Navy warship arrived at the scene Wednesday night.

The ship's captain still is being held hostage on a smaller boat.

Family members said Capt. Richard Phillips surrendered himself to the pirates to secure the safety of the crew. "What I understand is that he offered himself as the hostage," said Gina Coggio, 29, half sister of Phillips' wife. "That is what he would do. It's just who he is and his response as a captain."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Wednesday for world action to "end the scourge of piracy" as U.S. warships raced to confront the pirates.

"We are deeply concerned and we are following it very closely," Clinton said. "Specifically, we are now focused on this particular act of piracy and the seizure of a ship that carries 21 American citizens.

I was listening to some guy being interviewed on Fox,he said they carry high pressure water cannons, but no lethal weapons.

They're terrorists. I say fill the cannons with some type of hydrochloric acid that doesn't melt the lines and fire away.

"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed." Alexander Hamilton

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

God doesn't seem to have a dog in this fight, so.....blow their asses away.

Since you insist, I'm willing to believe that your god doesn't have any concern with the killing of innocents. Why you would worship this god does leave me confused, however.

As a side note, I'd recommend considering the consequences of a tactical nuclear precedent before you spout off again. Yelling "nuke them" may be satisfying, but no one with half a brain will respect you for it.

If congress had there way, they would take away all firearms...
Do you really think they are going to let ships defend themselves?

**** “most ports won’t let ships with armed sailors come into ports....” ****

All the ship would need is the opposite of a lighter vessel, a small vessel that remains out of port that maintains the armory until the ship leaves port.

They should hire retired and wounded military persons to defend every ship. With every weapon they need.

Yup.

I would certainly want to be armed if I were a sailor traveling through areas rife with piracy. However, I imagine ports have policies against ships being laden with explosives or otherwise equipped with certain weapons.

""As merchant vessels we do not carry arms. We have ways to push back, but we do not carry arms."

The destroyer USS Bainbridge is now on the scene. She carries arms - BIG arms.

In Minnesota where thousands of Somalis are or Denver airport where dozens work or Seattle?

They need to just shoot these pirates. Set traps for them and kill them. Let Blackwater do it. This is nonsnese.

If they were white Christian children at Waco the Democrats like Hillary/Hussein would know what to do or an innocent white woman in Idaho holding her baby.

Good idea, however, congress is inhabited by a bunch of silly, shallow, wimpy, fearful, cowardly, anti-American, Euro-loving, firearm fearing twits who don’t have the stones to mark a rock, much less stand up for Americans, or American interests.

Every last one of them needs to go.

I don’t know of a single government in that last 6,000 years that led it people into anything except the history books with the lesson - don’t let this happen to you.

Governments by nature never lead and by the time they react to following, all is lost.

Just tuning in after Idol...I was SO mad today when I heard some CNN babe describing the poor pirates who come from a war-torn nation where they have to be pirates to earn a living. The military guest blasted her—I was cheering.

The West’s response, or non-response, as it were, to this simple to solve problem is absolutely pathetic. Is there a historical precedent to such a display of weakness? But it is the same response as the response to all other outrageous acts by the Muzzies, from 911 to Daniel Pearl’s murder, to the Danish cartoons and the Dutch murders. The West is committing suicide and, surprise, it’s not Communism that’s causing it.

On the other hand, I expect that Russia and China will know how to deal with the Muzzie menace.
