JACKSON, Miss. Thanh Nguyen will soon give up the cramped travel trailer that's been her home for more than four years, pack her belongings into an old Toyota Corolla and rely on the kindness of others for a place to live.
She has no choice: The government is taking back the trailer.
"I'm going to pack everything I have in a car and go to my friends' houses and move on and on until I find something I can afford," the Vietnamese immigrant said through a translator. "It's for however long they allow me to stay."
Nguyen is one of nearly 6,000 residents in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama who face a May 1 deadline to leave the government trailers where they have lived since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita raked the Gulf Coast.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency said the $5.6 billion housing assistance program that began after the 2005 storms was the largest federal temporary housing operation in the nation's history.

Out on your asses, slackers - you’ve been freeloading long enough!
They were still getting funds? Its been years.

Why doesn’t she rely on herself. IT HAS BEEN 4 YEARS!!
I bet the deadline gets extended. Any takers?
What would you expect from a bunch of loser who sat on top of their roofs whining and waiting for the Gov’t to come save them?
More proof that dependence breeds dependence. Another failure liberal nanny state policy.
Not unless it's Black people who start crying.
I cannot proofread.
loser = losers
failure = failed
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry.
We just HAVE to cut these people, and this mindset, loose from our yoke.
I see no way to convince people like this that they must take care of themselves.
If our country splits on ideological lines, people like this will have to learn to work, have to move to the USSA side, will starve, or will turn to crime and meet their fate at the hands of a householder defending his property.
In all cases, problem solved. But it can’t be while we’re being forced to enable them.
“....Out on your asses, slackers - youve been freeloading long enough!...”
Watch your mouth! The majority of folks still in FEMA housing are old, disabled and unable to work. There is no ‘affordable’ housing here.
I lived in one of those crappy FEMA trailers for 17 months. I was lucky to have a friend who offered me a place to live, if I remodeled it, which I did.
Just because you have a biased opinion doesn’t mean you should show your ignorance at every opportunity.
Barak, let’s say one of your distant cousins comes to America, and moves in on the First Couch. The dude just smokes pot and plays GameCube all day, and orders up expensive stuff from the White House kitchen. How long are you going to let the freeloader sponge off you?
Get a JOB and get your own living place. Oh sorry did not realize that you never worked.
Anectdotal evidence? Any stats to back up your statement?
"Majority" would be 50% + 1.
How many people are in the trailers?
And how many are old, disabled, and TRULY unable to work?
Seeing as these were supposed to be a temporary solution, I think four years is about three too many.
My Home burned to ground a few days after the storm.
Have you been here? Of course not! You have no idea what it was like or how conditions are still touch and go for thousands.
Fire Station 7 - Gulfport - In continuous operation since Katrina.
I shot this photo on Feb 2, 2009
You’d think after 6 months they’d be asking some officials what next steps they should take in order to get back in their own living arrangements.
You know, being proactive in their dependence on others.
I live here.
Where is ‘evidence’ to contrary?
Of course it will be extended, just as it has been every three months since December 2005.
“....Youd think after 6 months theyd be asking some officials what next steps....”
Yeah, it’s been 4 years. Why don’t demonstrate some charity and get you ass down here; check things out for yourself. Then you won’t have any excuse for your ignorance.
I’m a Realtor. There is no affordable housing, rental or otherwise. We lost tens of thousands of homes, many folks are still paying notes on vacant lots because FEMA will not allow them to rebuild on their property.
About dang time. The people who weren't afraid to get off their duffs and do a little something to help themselves are already settled in new housing. No sense enabling the lazy good-for-nothings any longer.
Having said that, I'd be willing to bet that Obama manages to get some more money for the lazy bums in the 'chocolate city'.
