The Valkyrie' actor started plans to produce the 60s western - which is about two lovable bank robbers - last year and hopes to star in the with his close friend John Travolta.
A source said: "It has been a pet project of his that has been on the back-burner for years. But now he's ready to go, and will most likely happily eschew the enormous salary that he normally commands."
When the movie goes ahead Tom will revive the role of Sundance - previously played by Robert Redford - and John, 55, is expected to play Cassidy.
A friend told Britain's Daily Mirror: "Butch and Sundance is a labour of love for Tom. He was eight years old when he saw the original and it made an impression that has stayed with him all his life. He can't wait to get to work."

I wonder if Tom the real source behind this, or did the Church of Scientology put Travolta and Cruise up to it? Who owns the rights to the storyline?

He keeps Katie under lock-and-key, and he's twenty years older than she is. Creepy.
That's one WEIRD relationship, and one of these days she's going to get smart and get out.

That’s the only scene in the whole movie he could pull off. That one makes me cringe, and I love the film.

I hope it is not true. No one should remake that movie. It would be a sacrilege!

Oh, please, say it isn’t so! That is one of my all-time favorite movies and I don’t want it to be remade because the original was perfect!
Tom, don’t you have a couch to jump on somewhere, or some Xenu business to take care of? Please?

I thought Cruise was very good in “Magnolia,” and hilarious in “Tropic Thunder.”

“Valkyrie” was pretty good - but it took some getting used to... Cruise as a German aristocrat...

Rosie O'Donnell is working on a deal for a part in the film! Whether she's going to play the role of the "Sundance Kid" or a random appearance as a "mad cow" that attacks "Butch" is yet to be seen...
