Even if police officers had immediately entered the immigrant center where a gunman had just shot down 13 people, the victims' injuries were so severe that none would have survived, a county prosecutor said Sunday.
But police didn't enter the American Civic Association until nearly 45 minutes after the first 911 calls came in at 10:30 a.m. Friday. They began removing the wounded about 15 minutes after that.
It took more than two hours to clear the building. Survivors reported huddling for hours in a basement, not knowing whether they were still in danger after the gunman, 41-year-old Jiverly Wong, killed 13 people.
Medical examiners who conducted autopsies reported that the victims' injuries were so severe they would not have survived, Broome County District Attorney Gerald F. Mollen said....
When police arrived at the scene, the gunfire had stopped, so they believed there was no "active gunman" in the center and decided to wait for the SWAT team to arrive, Zikuski said.
The SWAT team entered the building until 11:13 a.m., 43 minutes after the first call to police....

Well, maybe they were having donuts. They certainly weren’t being aggressive.
Too bad the 911 call didn’t go to a local Volunteer Fire Department. Way too many of those guys are just “twitching like a finger on the trigger of a gun.” Wouldn’t have been possible to keep all of them from a chance at a golden ticket to hero-land. 43 minutes? VFD boys woulda been inside in 43 seconds.
Most people don’t understand... Police are enforcers, not protectors. Their job is to enforce the laws, not protect the citizen from harm. But at the same time when they do enforce the laws, that is a form of protection.
The only people that are paid to protect are the military.
On 9-11 many NYPD and NYFD went into the WT towers, not to return.
Coast Guard crews routinely go into hazardous conditions, risking their own lives, to rescue people they do not know.
POLICE are paid to put themselves at risk. Or do they prefer to write tickets and eat doughnuts?

What, pray tell, is the point of a SWAT team?
with the information we have now - it looks like it took 2 minutes to arrive.
The theory is that he heard the sirens and decided to shoot himself right then.
I don’t know the exact time of when they finally did decide to enter the building, some news reports say they were on the phone with the receptionist for 90 minutes. The national news this morning reported 38 minutes.
Now a personal attack? I guarantee that you would not me in such fashion without being able to hide behind your anonymous keyboard.
no we don’t know how they felt about the orders, but there were guys at the top giving those orders.
And what we do know is that the gunfire had stopped by the time they got there.
The receptionist was able to describe to them where the shooter was not located (in her room by the front door) and where she saw him go - to the adjacent room.
I am wondering what was stopping the guys in charge from giving the order to move in with their helmets/body armour/shields/weapons into the front room to begin the process of saving lives.
Years ago the police would have gone in to save people. This new breed of cop is no more than a glorified janitor. All they do is clean up the mess. Appears the only time they move is if one of theirs is in danger.
My objection is to the keyboard warriors who havedeclared the front-line cops as cowards.
There will always be men (and women) who take the hard jobs just as there will always be little people to yap and nip at their ankles. The first group wears a badge, a uniform and a name-tag. The second group hides behind the anonymity of the internet.
well I don’t know if they were cowards or not - that isn’t my concern.
I am looking at this from the perspective of “what if this were my love one in that building?”
And I think the number question I would have would be concerning the long wait -especially when they had valuable info from the receptionist.
Pretty easy to feel tough sitting at your keyboard, isn't it?

I have a concealed carry permit.
You can be damned sure that I would **REALLY** rush to use my revolver rather than cower in a corner begging for my life.
If more good citizens were armed we would see a lot less of these psychiatric meltdowns, and fewer deaths when they do happen.
Fathers were ready to go in at Columbine to save their kids while the cops sat on their collective asses. Oh ya, they stopped the dads from going in.
The police used to be respected in this country. Not any more. I am sure there are good cops out there, but they are in the minority. To many of them just harrass the general public, hence the lack of respect.
