U.S. Offers to Cut Nuclear Arms [Obama rewards N. Korea for its defiance]
WSJ ^ | APRIL 6, 2009 | JONATHAN WEISMAN, MARC CHAMPION and JAY SOLOMON

President Barack Obama, in the face of a rocket launch this weekend by North Korea, announced an ambitious U.S. arms-control campaign aimed at drastically reducing atomic weapons globally while still recognizing developing nations' rights to pursue nuclear power.

Mr. Obama's strategy, unveiled Sunday in a speech to a Czech crowd of 20,000, commits the U.S. to take the lead in reducing its nuclear-weapons stockpile in a bid to gain Russian and Chinese support for curbing the mounting proliferation threats posed by North Korea and Iran.

The president said he would convene an international summit in Washington aimed at shrinking the world's nuclear weapons arsenals. At that meeting, he is likely to propose creating a new international agency to pursue the effort, a senior U.S. official said.

The administration is also working to develop an international nuclear-fuel bank, potentially hosted by Kazakhstan, that fledgling nuclear-power states could tap, according to a senior Obama administration official.

Mr. Obama said North Korea's defiance of the international community in launching the missile -- which fell into the Pacific Ocean over 700 miles east of Japan -- illustrated the urgency for a new round of arms-control initiatives...

Mr. Obama specifically outlined U.S. plans to support treaties banning the production of weapons-grade materials, as well as the testing of atomic weapons, efforts backed by President Bill Clinton but largely ignored by Mr. Bush.

Speaking at Prague's Castle Square, Mr. Obama told the audience his administration was committed "to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons."

"We have to insist: 'Yes, we can,'" he said, reprising a campaign theme recognizable to a crowd a continent away from his election victory...

Actually he’ll get a major US city killed. Considering who tends to live there and how they tend to vote, I can’t say my ambivalence meter is quite at zero.

This would require treaty approval in the Congress, right? At least there is a chance of stopping this.

When I first read this I honestly thought it was satire.

Kazakhstan!?

And what is the chain of thought that a weakened US will buy Russian and Chinese cooperation on N. Korea?

I sure hope so. The “Red Dawn” thing would be the only other alternative.

So, they are going to put the nuclear clearinghouse in a country that is controlled by Russia and may fall back into the Soviet orbit? Obama is really sending this country down the toilet and selling it to Russia and China as fast as he can.

Obama’s hatred of American nuclear weapons is straight from Rev. Wright’s sermons. Obama believes the nonsense about the evil and racism of our use of the weapon against Japan in WWII.

President Barack Obama, in the face of a rocket launch this weekend by North Korea, announced an ambitious U.S. arms-control campaign aimed at drastically reducing atomic weapons globally while still recognizing developing nations' rights to pursue nuclear power.

So, let me get this straight.

1. Nuclear weapons bad.

2. Nuclear power good.

So, assuming that every nation at some point develops it's own nuclear power. What is to stop West Tanzamboria from using that nuclear expertise to make a little nuclear arsenel on the side, and then use it to flatten their ancient enemies, the people of East Tanzamboria?

It certainly won't be the United States. Think about it. If we have no nuclear weapons, and West Tanzamboria has them, then they've got the upper hand. We're certainly not going to invade a nuclear armed nation to take their nukes, when we have none ourselves. At that point, we may as well have machetes.

After the nuke goes off, how far do you think a FReeper will have to be from DC to still have a working Internet connection (cable or DSL).

“President Barack Obama, in the face of a rocket launch this weekend by North Korea, announced an ambitious U.S. arms-control campaign aimed at drastically reducing atomic weapons globally while still recognizing developing nations’ rights to pursue nuclear power.”

Obama, the smiling idiot, seems completely unaware of how his hero, Jammah Cahtah, managed to get the KorComs nuclear capable in the first place! Bambi, Cahtah’s plan WAS to get them nuclear for electrical; it was originally a light water reactor build and paid for on America’s dime, you fool!

I’ve just been reading Dinesh D’Souza’s biography of Ronald Reagan, which devotes a couple chapters to the arms race during the Cold War. Despite opposition from the hawks and doves of the time (on different issues), Reagan still managed to assure US superiority and force the Soviets to negotiate and ultimately to crumble. And he sure didn’t go about it this way! Pity Obama won’t learn from Reagan’s example— he might actually do something to promote American interests.

I can't answer that, since I don't know where all the routing hubs are ... but remember that the Internet was originaly devised as a DARPA project to allow multiple redundant means of communincation in the event of a nuclear attack.

Cheers!

I think Obama's problem with missile's has nothing to due with them being destructive. I think something inside him see's them as a phallic symbol that must be removed from the world.
