ROME (Reuters) - A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy Monday about 53 miles northeast of Rome, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
A Reuters correspondent in Rome said he and his family had been woken by the quake.
No other details were immediately available.

SNIPPET: “Rafael Abreu hael US Geological Survey told Sky News the quake happened at 3.32am local time.
“This is a significant earthquake,” he said. “This is a shallow quake but there is definitely a possibility of damage and even injuries.
“It is going to depend on what type of buildings are in the area.
“We haven’t had any information yet coming from the epicentre area.”

Assisi is not the same place since it was damaged by a quake some twelve years ago. Hopefully this one won’t have done too much damage.
Those Italian hilltop towns are built to withstand almost anything though.
