Assisi is not the same place since it was damaged by a quake some twelve years ago. Hopefully this one won’t have done too much damage.
Those Italian hilltop towns are built to withstand almost anything though.
Rome, ITALY (BNO NEWS) — A major earthquake struck central Italy on Monday morning, officials tell BNO News.
The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 to 6.7, hit about 95 km northeast of Rome, according to several earthquake centers. A spokeswoman for the United States Geological Survey told BNO News that the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a 5.7 magnitude, with RAI News putting the magnitude at 5.8. A tsunami warning center earlier reported that the quake had a magnitude of 6.7.
There was no immediate word on casualties but residents in Rome were awaken by the earthquake, which struck at 3.33 a.m. local time. The earthquake had a depth of only a few kilometers, which means the earthquake was much more powerful. RAI News reported that there was chaos and a number of evacuations near the epicenter.
Earthquakes can be particularly dangerous in parts of Italy where centuries-old buildings are left in disrepair. An official with the USGS told Sky News that residents should prepare for aftershocks, which can be near the size of the original quake.
The quake follows a light earthquake earlier today, which struck several hours earlier.
I wonder if the leaning tower of Pisa came down. It’s up north of Rome.
Prayers for the Holy Father as Holy Week begins.
I suspect this will end up in breaking news.
"I am not happy with the Catholic Church inviting such a proponent of abortion being honored at a Catholic University named after the mother Jesus. What do I have to next?"Please note: I did this because Obama's visit to Europe to emphasize that I am not happy!
"Sodom and Gomorah eventually got the message (too late, of course)".
One must realize that the unborn and the blood of the unborn being murdered by abortion cry out for justice!
What was the name of the guy who owned lots of abortion clinics and had the plane he own crash into a cemetery.
Oh, that's right -- Feldkamp...
That’s a pretty substantial quake. Not good...
