Acquaintances: Gunman's Rampage 'Not A Surprise' (Gunman: "America sucks.")
AP/NPR ^

Posted on 04/04/2009 8:17:00 PM PDT by Chet 99

NPR.org, April 4, 2009 · Jiverly Wong was upset over losing his job at a vacuum plant, didn't like people picking on him for his limited English and once angrily told a co-worker, "America sucks."

It remains unclear exactly why the Vietnamese immigrant strapped on a bulletproof vest, barged in on a citizenship class and killed 13 people and himself, but the police chief says he knows one thing for sure: "He must have been a coward."

"and once angrily told a co-worker, "America sucks." Maybe he should have took up his grievance with the Senate?

Wong came here 23+ years ago with his father and family. He became a citizen and, like the rest of his family, played by the rules and worked until he recently changed his outlook on life.

He made the decision to be hateful and end his life in a burst of harm to other innocent people. There is a small sub set of suicide by cop like this and predicting it is very difficult. It would have been best if those who knew him and were close had intervened and sought out help or at least tipped off the authorities. Too often people around such a dysfunctional person don’t accept the reality of intervention and keep up the pretense he is a “good person.”

If you see or know a person who is becoming a dangerous crack up, do something or bad things will possibly happen due to your inaction. Caring about others includes stopping that person from carrying out an evil deed.

This guy was from Vietnam, came here, hired by IBM and America sucks???? Where do these immigrants get off saying we owe them anything but for them to learn our language and accept our society and way of living .... is that too hard to understand? My great grandmother came over from Hungary, learned the language and wanted to become part of America. Now days these people come over demanding that we bow to their culture, have laws written in their language and expect us to live according to their beliefs????

Just to throw a bit of a question out there: but why is such a big deal being made that he had a bullet-proof vest?

Another question, would be: Did the police slap it on after-the-fact and trump it up?

Something about the story doesn’t seem right. And I’m sure there’s some details [probably important] that are not being reported.

"What will be revealed if the investigation goes deep enough is that many people in a shooter's world knew that he was angry, mad, unreasonable, scary at times, and recently some of them came to learn that he was threatening and armed," said Dietz, who is not involved in the Binghamton investigation. "They've known that for a long time, but none of them did what they should have done with that information."

Doing what we should do with this sort of information SHOULD prevent this sort of tragedy, but unfortunately our insane medical privacy laws, which extend fully to mental illness, pretty much ensure that reporting concerns about someone like this is a waste of time. He'll be sent to counseling, given a few pills, and sent on his merry way, with no one but himself allowed to know if his diagnosis was paranoid schizophrenic, sociopath with homicidal ideation, etc.

I don't fault Wong in this. It sounds like he was really suffering from mental illness, and given his background, may have suffered some really damaging experiences before he came here. HE sent up plenty of red warning flags before he actually hurt anyone. WE need to put common sense back into our legal system.

I wouldn’t make too much of the “worked at IBM” detail. Given that his next job was with a caterer where after 7 years he had “worked up to” making $9/hour, and that he still can’t speak English, I’m sure he wasn’t anything more than a janitor or groundsworker. And given the number of pampered upper-middle class native-born American college students who run around saying “America sucks”, I don’t read much into Wong saying it. It’s a sign of detachment from reality — in his case the detachment was a good bit more extreme than most of the pampered college students.

“America sucks”
What else is new?
He was very frustrated at not learning English

Meanwhile we have millions of illegals and legal immigrants from Mexico, Central America etc who could care less about learning English because they can live in a Spanish bubble here very easily. Spanish TV. Spanish neighborhoods. Spanish supermarkets etc

"America sucks."

There's a success story in acculturation. /sarcasm>

Since this murderer was a product of the very place he shot-up I wonder if they'll now start helping people who really WANT to be Americans?

We need to completely get rid of gun-free guaranteed-unarmed-victim zones.
There are a lot more of these sicko losers in circulation.

America’s awesome. It’s the government that sucks. The money right out of your wallet...wish they’d read that “Constitution thingy” once in a while.
