Barack Obama fails to win Nato troops he wants for Afghanistan
Michael Evans and David Charter in Strasbourg
Barack Obama made an impassioned plea to Americas allies to send more troops to Afghanistan, warning that failure to do so would leave Europe vulnerable to more terrorist atrocities.
But though he continued to dazzle Europeans on his debut international tour, the Continents leaders turned their backs on the US President.
Gordon Brown was the only one to offer substantial help. He offered to send several hundred extra British soldiers to provide security during the August election, but even that fell short of the thousands of combat troops that the US was hoping to prise from the Prime Minister.
Just two other allies made firm offers of troops. Belgium offered to send 35 military trainers and Spain offered 12. Mr Obamas host, Nicolas Sarkozy, refused his request.
The derisory response threatened to tarnish Mr Obamas European tour, which yesterday included a spellbinding performance in Strasbourg in which he offered the world a vision of a future free of nuclear weapons.

Maybe they know he really doesn’t want to win the WOT.
Your move 0. Gee, it’s tough being president.
Nah, they’re just that not into him.
They are basically telling him that he can’t tell them what to do. They are feeling a sense of power since he apologized about the US. When you apologize, you loose. Especially in governmental affairs. His lack of experience is showing big time and in areas it shouldn’t be. Whoever is advising him is putting his head on a chopping block.
I wonder if the shine in liberal and media eyes over all things Euro will now diminish for failing to bow to the will of the American Presidential Allah.
The guy cannot get a black eye...
Got nothing and gave away everything. We can complain, but he’s happy because the Europeans think he’s cool.
Obama gave America a ‘black eye’. . .and Europe cheered. Was he expecting more?

A “spellbinding performance”? Give me a break.
Oh yeah, they hated Bush but will love Obama.
Libs are such naive a__holes.
I agree completely with your post.
Yep, they love him when he weakens America but when the rubber hits the road won’t lift a finger to help out.
They might be socialists but they’re not stupid. They can tell the guys a complete and utter fool and will single-handedly destroy America.
With this, aren’t we still the lone “cowboy” in the world? They’ll come crying when another attack occurs!
Isn’t it nice how the EUnuchs get to superintend our economy without willing to shed a drop of blood for the very liberty which enables free enterprise to grow and thrive? Everyone who voted for B. Hussein O will now have American blood on their hands.
Obama lectures Europe.
I hope the N Koreans and Iran got the memo.
They will have an epiphany when they meet O for diplomatic talks.
This article is a perfect example of the difference between adulation and leadership. Obama is a “rock star”, but not enough of a heavyweight to work his will. Why? Quite simply, praise and photo ops are cheap, action is expensive.
I really hate Hussein, I really do. I live for the day to see him get what he’s got coming to him, and he will. His own party will eventually turn against him and he will be another failed Jimmy *peanut* Carter.
