Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave a pretty philosophical keynote at the GOP fundraiser tonight.
At times the 30-minute address sounded like a history lesson or a college lecture.
As the crowd welcomed him with a standing ovation, Romney warned that he'd be speaking seriously. This would be no pep rally full of political zingers.
"These are critical times," Romney said. "Defining times for the world and the nation."
Romney talked about what he saw as competing world philosophies, including that of jihadists, and critical times in history, like the Civil War and the American Revolution.
"Republicans are the revolutionaries of the day because we fervently, passionately, ardently believe that the individual accounts for the strength of America today," Romney said.
The former Massachusetts governor and businessman also explained how he sees the Democrats' view on power: that it lies in the hands of government and bureaucrats.
"We recognize it is the power of the individual that's made America what it is," Romney said.
He later continued, "I think the American people are seeing through what's happening. The Democrats are trying to use the crisis to further their philosphy of the supremacy of government ... The American people are not as thick as some would believe or have us believe."

Apparently unable to energize college students, Romney this week unveiled Students for Mitt, an unprecedented scheme to pay college students to raise money for him. [Associated Press, 3/27/07] This follows recent reports that Romney has spent tens of thousands of dollars buying support from leading conservative groups, gave $5,000 to a leading pro-life organizer who recently endorsed him, and paid busloads of college students to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference and vote in CPACs straw poll. Thanks for posting this info, Arizona Carolyn.
I will never vote for a gun grabber. Anyone who ever held such a view hasn’t changed his mind either.
I thought it was common knowledge, was actually surprised so many here didn’t know this.
Mitt Romney spends over five minutes touting his pro-abortion stance during the 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign. Romney's attempt to be more gung-ho on the issue of abortion than the Democrat he's debating makes me feel queasy.
Bonus: near the end of the clip, his opponent rightly points out his flip-flop on the abortion issue. It seems that Mitt was mildly against abortion before he was enthusiastically in favor of abortion, which of course was before he was maybe possibly against it (again).
Mitt Romney: Collect the whole set.
Sounds like you changed your tune real fast once you realized you called Jim Robinson a fool.
Nice pic :)
Q: Are you still for the Brady Bill?
Mitt Romney: The Brady Bill has changed over time, and, of course, technology has changed over time. I would have supported the original assault weapon ban. I signed an assault weapon ban in Massachusetts as governor because it provided for a relaxation of licensing requirements for gun owners in Massachusetts, which was a big plus. And so both the pro-gun and the anti-gun lobby came together with a bill, and I signed that. And if there is determined to be, from time to time, a weapon of such lethality that it poses a grave risk to our law enforcement personnel, thats something I would consider signing. Theres nothing of that nature thats being proposed today in Washington. But I would look at weapons that pose extraordinary lethality.
LOL, good post.
We have all seen Mitt Romney promoting his core beliefs in public, on video.
If we list the ones on which he appears the most passionate, the most convincing and the most sincere the winners all appear to be the lefty version of Mitt Romney.
It appears you did not get what I said. The important point is that we really need to expend our energy fighting the democrats and not each other and changing the election laws so Republicans nominate Republicans and not a combination of Republicans, Democrats and others.
Romney’s worse than a Democrat. He’s the enemy within.
Romney: "Thank Me that my faithful blind RomneyBOTs continue to subvert honest FReepers
who dare to expose my scurrilous record, my fake endorsements, my fake troopers,
sporting fake badges, illegal security tactics, bizarre staffers,
hatred of the military, release of unrepentant murderers, receipt of AIG Contributions in 2008 ,
my imposition of gay marriage by usurping the Mass. Constitution,
my infliction of socialized medicine without a vote to impose European "healthcare" (except for me),
my abuse of Seamus violating Massachusetts's animal cruelty laws,
most say were uncalled for making me a presidential candidate of distinction in many ways leading to
TIME's 200 comments from readers complaining of animal cruelty
which did unfairly expose me, like the Globe about my Belmont illegal alien sanctuary,
or so many about my team secretly criticizing and attacking Gov. Palin and the other candidates."
Fool? Just who is brow-beating a class of ‘97 FReeper?? If you can’t handle the debate on your own then there’s no point in wasting everyone’s time by trying to ping-in management.
Can't help that...all I was doing was reminding folks of the boss's policy on promoting Romney around here.
Aren't you a McCain man anyway? What're you doing taking up for a Romney supporter?
Uh, nope - he didn't call Jim a fool. In fact he didn't even once mention Mitt Romney (or Jim) in the post. Stop wasting everyone's time.
He never had a straw with me. All it took was one look at his miserable liberal record as governor and I knew he was a big-government RINO. Anybody who supports him is no friend of this forum.
Regardless of which side of the abortion issue you are on, it should make you pause and wonder what sort of person he is. Good grief.
Even most "pro-choice" advocates like to say that abortion should be "rare, but legal". Not Mitt Romney. On that video he says nothing about rare and everything about free access to abortion.
Here's more to ponder:
Q: Do you believe life begins at conception?
A: I do. I believe from a political perspective that life begins at conception. I dont pretend to know, if you will, from a theological standpoint when life begins.

From a political perspective? Not moral. not ethical. He can't tell you about moral or ethical. Only political. He can't pretend to know, in his own words. Only politically. What kind of person can't say? Can't even pretend to know?
Regardless of their view on the subject of abortion, ask any adult what their opinion is, and they at least have an opinion.
How does Mitt Romney not know or have an opinion? He didn't have one less than 2 years ago.
Are moral and ethical decisions above Mitt Romney's pay grade?

Another "reach across the aisle" RINO. phttt
He obviously knows nothing about firearms or what the anti-gun lobby is really about. Or he just doesn't care and goes with whatever breeze is blowing at any given time.
How can Mitt Romney not know? He gave that interview less than two years ago. He's an adult, he attends church, he counsels others... and he doesn't know?
Honestly, I'd be more comfortable seated next to an unabashed pro-abortion advocate than someone who has obviously thought about it, but lacks the ability or capacity to discern.
At least I could try to persuade the pro-abortion person. If they were capable of reaching one conclusion, they may be capable of reaching another.
But someone who has thought about it and lacks the ability to decide? What hope is there?
