Wow! Church Stake Leader and religious counselor, Bishop Mitt Romney takes a strong, courageous stand on abortion as a presidential candidate.

Q: Do you believe life begins at conception?

A: I do. I believe from a political perspective that life begins at conception. I don’t pretend to know, if you will, from a theological standpoint when life begins.

Meet the Press: 2007 “Meet the Candidates” series Dec 16, 2007

"From a political perspective? Not moral. not ethical. He can't tell you about moral or ethical. Only political. He can't pretend to know, in his own words. Only politically. What kind of person can't say? Can't even pretend to know?"

I'm continuing to ponder this. It makes the mind reel.

How can Mitt Romney not know? He gave that interview less than two years ago. He's an adult, he attends church, he counsels others... and he doesn't know?

Honestly, I'd be more comfortable seated next to an unabashed pro-abortion advocate than someone who has obviously thought about it, but lacks the ability or capacity to discern.

At least I could try to persuade the pro-abortion person. If they were capable of reaching one conclusion, they may be capable of reaching another.

But someone who has thought about it and lacks the ability to decide? What hope is there?
