Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave a pretty philosophical keynote at the GOP fundraiser tonight.

At times the 30-minute address sounded like a history lesson or a college lecture.

As the crowd welcomed him with a standing ovation, Romney warned that he'd be speaking seriously. This would be no pep rally full of political zingers.

"These are critical times," Romney said. "Defining times for the world and the nation."

Romney talked about what he saw as competing world philosophies, including that of jihadists, and critical times in history, like the Civil War and the American Revolution.

"Republicans are the revolutionaries of the day because we fervently, passionately, ardently believe that the individual accounts for the strength of America today," Romney said.

The former Massachusetts governor and businessman also explained how he sees the Democrats' view on power: that it lies in the hands of government and bureaucrats.

"We recognize it is the power of the individual that's made America what it is," Romney said.

He later continued, "I think the American people are seeing through what's happening. The Democrats are trying to use the crisis to further their philosphy of the supremacy of government ... The American people are not as thick as some would believe or have us believe."

It seems you are willing to risk losing the right to gun ownership entirely, rather then accept less than 100% of what you want. I am not.

I hate to be so blunt, so historically accurate, and bring up any of a hundred instances in the last hundred years where hundreds of million of unarmed citizens have been murdered by government, but that’s the truth.

The founders were not limp, liberal saps. The knew their old history of republican city states, the Dutch, Cromwell and their only costly war, and they put weapons in right after free speech.

Courting the NRA seemed to be the last thing from Romney’s mind during his unsuccessful 1994 bid to oust Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass.

In an interview with the Boston Herald during the 1994 campaign, Romney positioned himself as a moderate outsider, warning special interest groups to stay out of the race and saying he supported a ban on assault rifles and the Brady gun control law.

“That’s not going to make me the hero of the NRA,” he said at the time. “I don’t line up with a lot of special interest groups.”

It’s theme that would carry over into Romney’s 2002 campaign for governor.

During a debate with Democratic candidate Shannon P. O’Brien, Romney said he would do nothing to change the state’s firearms statutes.

“We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them; I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety,” he said.

And as governor, Romney signed one of the toughest assault weapons laws in the country.

The state ban mirrored a national ban set to expire at the time.
