ATLANTA Georgia would require that new drivers take a written license test in English under a bill being considered by state lawmakers, and the proposal has some employers and immigrant advocates worried it would keep people unfamiliar with the language from being able to work.
The measure is the latest in a series of English-only legislation around the country, but Georgia is believed to be the only state that would have a law requiring that drivers take the written test in English without a translator or other aid. Versions of the bill have passed both chambers of the Legislature, and lawmakers are trying to hash out differences before the session ends Friday.

Well it’s about freakin’ time...........
English is not a bad language, overall, but I must say I truly prefer American.
Nope. They can always go work somewhere else where they don't need to speaka da language...
I think they should deliver the test in Georgian. Maybe Russian too, if you want to avoid another invasion.
It will never pass legal muster. You can’t claim that English is required to safely drive the roads since it’s established law that literacy itself cannot be a requirement and those who cannot read MUST be given a verbal test.
I hope Georgia is going to get serious about illegal immigrants.
Have you driven in a foreign county? How many times did you crash?
And those counties are???
The flip remark is to say that that was not a problem since the locals don't bother to read them either.
But, I'd be interested to know how you determined where you were. I drove in Kuwait where they had western-style freeways. I was lucky in that the town names were in English as well as Arabic. I learned their numbers ASAP so I could tell the speed limit but other than that it was still tricky - many times when searching for the company's oil camp, I got "after you leave the freeway, turn left at the first sand dune" and what few secondary road signs there were, were all in Arabic.
Oops - countries.
Ya reckon that if’n the test aint given in nuttin but English dat only English speakin’ folks from Georgia will be able to drive down yonder?
Dang time that someone stood up fer proper English instead of that other jibberish that them other folks talk.
If you don’t know where you’re going, all roads will get you there. I drove in China (never again - you need a psychiatrist after), but with directions, never had problems getting on the right road.
Go easy on them. These people just want to work hard and play by the . . . uh, I mean, make their own rules.
I don’t expect “foreign” countries to post signage or let me abuse their healthcare and education systems just because I REFUSE to learn their language.

One of these days you will depend on the folks you make fun of to save this country.
You're probably right, but it SHOULD. Unless you have an international drivers' license. Or lack of English should be for a limited time, say one year.
If you can't speak English you'll have a lot of trouble with warning signs, etc., creating a hazardous condition for others.
Or, you might be an illegal alien. Those, once discovered, should have their cars impounded and sold, their rear ends taken to jail, and immediate deportation enforced.
By trebuchet.
That’s unconstitutional, racist and anti-immigrant. It won’t happen.
