Update from Senator John Cornyn
email ^ | March 30, 2009 | Senator John Cornyn

Posted on 04/01/2009 10:14:55 AM PDT by beejaa

I got an email from Senator John Cornyn which says, in part, "Despite my concerns with the Democrats’ budget and its reckless spending and misguided priorities, I was encouraged that my amendment to bring a little Texas sunshine to Washington unanimously passed the Budget Committee. My measure, based on the successful Texas model, which has led to the elimination of more than 50 agencies and saved Texans more than $700 million, lays the groundwork for the establishment of a Federal Sunset Commission to review federal programs. It will determine their efficiency, and make recommendations on whether they need reform or should be eliminated all together. This bipartisan commission is critical because it will shed light on unnecessary government spending and eliminate ineffective and unnecessary programs. "

Our government is big and cumbersome. Undoubtedly lobbyists will go to work on this Committee if it ever manages to come into being. Still, the amendment is a step towards scaling back the size of government a bit.

Well meaning, and it probably worked in Texas.

But in the present circumstances, it’s just one more committee or agency that Obama and Pelosi can stuff with their pals. And the prospect of ever closing down any of the federal bureaucracy is zero, as long as O and the Dems remain in power.

Dream on. Washington continues to grow like a cancer, eventually killing all that surrounds it. With this administration, America will wither and the cancer will continue to expand.

In other words, who is going to stop it?? The Republicans?

Thank you Senator.

Let us let the rest know what we support and expect them to support as well.

No more, “we won you lost, get over it” from Nancy Pelosi. She has a lot of power due to her position. We must stay aware of her intentions and actions. She is overstepping her office; and is proud of it.

Will the Federal Sunset Commission look at whether the programs are Constitutional or not?

>> This bipartisan commission would be tasked with reviewing federal programs, determining their efficiency, and making recommendations on whether they need reform or should be eliminated all together.

This is lame.

NO teeth, just an “advisory” commission to “make recommendations”.

Since the Rats control Congress, guess who would have the majority on the commission? Guess which programs they would “recommend” to sunset?

No, this is just so the King Poseur can get a little “ink” and have an excuse for voting for the outlandish budget.

Grow some nuts, Cornyn. Get up in Reid’s face and shamelessly and vociferously oppose the entire budget! Not author dumbass worthless “feelgood” amendments.

Anyone who gives Cornyn kudos for this posturing nonsense is pretty damn naive.

I call both my senators’ DC offices several times every week to let them know how I feel about their performances. They parted company on the omnibus budget bill. Corker opposed it, but Alexander was one of the few ‘pubs to support it, based on all of the Tennessee pork he supposedly obtained.

So now, every time I call his office, I remind the flunky about my dissatisfaction with that vote, but I tell him (or her) that I NEVER AGAIN want to hear about trying to buy my vote with my own money!

Here’s a better idea...let Washington propose a budget for the coming year and then let Americans “vote” with their tax dollars on which programs get funded and which ones don’t.

IE: If you pay $5000 in taxes, you can add $2500 to the military and $2500 to education or you could blow all $5000 funding a “piss Christ” exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. It would be entirely up to you. Those programs that don’t get the support are downsized and eventually removed.

This way, if a corporation used its political persuasion to force tax payers to give it free money, there could still be a chance that it would never get funded if none of the tax payers themselves chose that option (wonderful as it may be).

Another layer of checks and balances...

I got the same email and laughed at it. When the current Republicans were in power they did nothing to cut wasteful government spending.

No true Conservative would have ever voted for Porkulous. And I let both him and cheerleader Hutchison know about it.

This “commission” is just window dressing for campaign literature.
