SNIPPET: "The CIA is attempting to recruit more spies by advertising on the internet, radio and television, and by holding meetings with American Muslims to make up a severe shortage of Arabic speakers....
Leon Panetta, the new CIA director, will meet Muslim groups in cities such as Detroit to spearhead personally the new drive to recruit Arabic speakers. He recently lamented the fact that only 13 per cent of CIA officers speak a foreign language, and just 22 per cent come from minorities.
"In order to accomplish our vital intelligence mission we want to market our employment opportunities to speakers of Arabic, Russian, Korean, Pashtu and Urdu," George Little, a CIA spokesman, told The Times....
Earlier this month Scott White, third in command at the CIA, held meetings with Arab-American and Chaldean-American representatives in Detroit, which has heavily populated American Muslim suburbs. He told the groups that he would bring Mr Panetta to a future meeting...."

If the CIA is going to infiltrate Muslim extremist groups, they need a good supply of native Arabic speakers of the right ethnicities, who can pass for the jihadist version of “good ol’ boys”. They can start out the trainees by having them surf the internet, zipping through the reams of extremist stuff posted in Arabic. We are screwed if we don’t have enough native Arabic speakers in the CIA to cover all this stuff.

The shortage of Arabic and Farsi interpreters is the fault of the Government. Shortly after 9-11 the Government was recruiting Arabic and Farsi interpreters. The only catch was that one had to have a Masters Degree to be considered. Unfortunately for the Government they didn’t have many takers. Then there were the Arabic speaking Jews that applied. They were not considered at all.

I finished watching NCIS 5 minutes. Something was mentioned during the show that I wondered about. Are Homeland Security & CIA the only agencies that can confiscate funds suspected for use in terrorism or illegal activity like drug trade? Any freeper know this?

I don’t know. Exactly how would a white non-Arabic-speaking, non-Muslim guy infiltrate these groups?

I've been saying it for the longest time: LEARN ARABIC! Currently the majority of Arabic linguists working for the government are Muslims--not exactly trustworthy.
Too many American students are too lazy to learn anything other than French and Spanish. Well, the "hard" languages are in critical demand and reliable speakers are just as critical. It's doable, really. Look at my tagline. Learn to read this: العربية It's not as hard as it looks ;)

Absolutely. In the 70s we had not one Farsi speaker at the US Embassy in Tehran. The ambassador to Iran didn't know one word of Farsi and knew nothing about Islam (know thy enemy, you know) and had to be tutored on it by the Pakistani ambassador to Iran. The CIA completely missed the Shah's overthrow. In Lebanon during the Marines barracks bombing and hostage taking, we had a grand total of one Arabic speaker. In Afghanistan the US Embassy had no Urdu/Pashtu speakers and had to ask the Soviets for help in translating. And today we've got the reset/overcharge screw-up in the State Department.

Many American contractors that had been in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and elsewhere are pretty good at speaking Arabic and Farsi. Some did live in American compounds while many lived among the general populace. Learning the language, dialect and customs were a matter of survival.

My experience with Americans living abroad flips the frequencies, but there are still enough to agree with the general principle. There is still a problem between "getting by" and "knowing". Arabic is especially a what you see is not what you get language, and it helps to have a native speaker to understand when you are being f***ed with.

Absolutely. In the 70s we had not one Farsi speaker at the US Embassy in Tehran. Now that you mention it, I do not recall ever hearing Farsi being spoken during my visits there.

I agree. The variant in the inflection of some tones changes the entire meaning.

Beats me. Just be prepared (or pretend) to face Mecca and bow down 5 times in a day, plus have a wicked prayer rug handy.

Panetta recruiting Muzzies to be in the CIA. Why do I not have a warm-fuzzy feeling about this? You know, the CIA has already spent millions and millions of dollars recruiting and arming Muslims around the world. The armed forces have done the same. That give you a warm-fuzzy?
To: G8 Diplomat
Worth considering; please keep posting these announcements.
Will the govt. consider funding the classes in return for a commitment to work for them?
Cheers!
