Upstate battle for Kirsten Gillibrand Congressional seat is too-close-to-call

ALBANY — After a short, tense campaign, the two candidates in a New York congressional special election that focused on President Barack Obama's popularity and his economic policy were separated by fewer than 100 votes, and it looked likely the race would be decided by absentee ballots.

With all but one of the 610 voting precincts in the 20th Congressional District reporting, Democrat Scott Murphy led Republican Jim Tedisco by 81 votes out of more than 154,000 cast Tuesday in the race to replace Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand. A problem with a machine in Saratoga Springs delayed the final reporting from one precinct.

Hopefully it spreads everywhere. The libtards I know aren’t smiling anymore.

3 years, 295 days to go.

The Bushes were never good for America or for the Republicans.

Bush I was an incompetent globalist. He was the Vice President Reagan really didn't want. The party big wigs forced him on Ronnie. Bush I’s term was a catastrophe and he ran a miserable campaign against Clinton. It was obvious he didn't really want to win. Barbara Bush is an anti-gun crude loudmouthed dolt.

Bush II is a man of limited intellect and his last term was a catastrophe that anticipated by idiotic moves at the end of his first term.

I hope to God we never see these damn globalists in any position of authority in America again.

Did you know that Bush II’s cum in college was about 76? And that Kerry's cum was even LOWER?!! Bush II FLUNKED one course in college - it must have been basic economics, public speaking or world history. Kerry flunked TWO!!!

No wonder we are in such trouble when we have to choose from idiots like Bush I, Dole, Clinton, Dukakis, Kerry, Gore, McCain and Obama!!

They couldn't run a lemonade stand let alone a country!

It's real bad when we are counting the days on a 4 year clock.

The National Republican Trust ran many ads for Tedisco as well.

The GOP fell apart on its collective moderate ideology. The Senate ‘Gang’ and the spending in Congress discouraged the constituency. It had nothing to do with Bush. POTUS was out of mind beginning with the 2006 mid-terms.

The GOP is no better today despite the absence of #43. At what point do we stop blaming Bush for the inadequacies of the other Republicans still circulating in DC?

May have something to do with the fact that the so-called GOP leadership isn’t very strong in leadership or substance.

We have a real leadership vacuum.

We have to realize where we screwed up in the first place to prevent repetition of the error in the future. Political orthodoxy does count.

I agree with you about McCain's gang.

But Bush's mismanagement of Middle Eastern foreign policy, his idiotic plan for missiles in eastern Europe, his trust of Putin, his failure on the Mexican border and with illegal aliens, his sponsorship of the first flawed bail out plan, his economic budgetary screw-ups, the Harriet Miers scam, etc, etc., set the ground work for the failure of the Republicans in 2006 and 2008.

NO MORE BUSHES - EVER!!!

Sure, he made a number of errors, but don’t those failures seem trivial compared to what we’re seeing now?

The Democrats are creating an unprecedented opportunity for GOP victories, but that will not happen for as long as the GOP refuses to abandon its vacant existence.

There is not one identifiable candidate that I believe can take the party forward to a victory in 2012. Today’s ‘hopefuls’ should be the norm, not the exception.

Sorry to hear the rodents are being nasty to your Mom. She does not deserve that disgusting behavior. Thank you for your service and I do hope that they count your absentee...Unfortunately I can’t guarantee it would be counted now a days. I think ten or fifteen years ago we could safely say it would be counted....today...not so much.

Thanks for the support! Yeah, it’s unfortunate that things have degressed the way they have in upstate NY. To be fair, I’m from Oneonta... A weirdo, hippie college-town that has always been far to the left of center.

Question for anyone in the district, especially those with access to past voting information — is there any way to find out the breakdown of absentee votes in past elections? One way to do this would be to compare the tally as of election night vs. the final tally. Given the Dem margin in 2008 in the Congressional race, it might be better to look at the Presidential results (though I’m sure that Zero did pretty well too).

In any event, what I’m getting at is how did the absentee vote break down in previous races as compared to the overall vote? That might be an indication of how it will break down this time. For instance, if the GOP did 5 points better among absentee voters than among regular votes in the November 2008 races, that would be a good sign.

I’m a resident of this district and am in school out of state—I sent in my absentee ballot for Tedisco so I know there’s at least one more vote coming for him when those get tallied! Hoping and praying he’ll make it in.

Can we change hearts and minds?

Yes.

Nov. 2008
(D) Gillibrand 62%
(R) Treadwell 38%

Mar. 2009
(D) Murphy 50%
(R) Tedisco 50%

This was a strongly Republican district for decades before Gillibrand was voted in a few years ago. There are still conservative Republicans standing in upstate NY!

Went to S.U.C.O....loved my time spent in your hometown....one of my friends still lives there year round....

Some of my fondest memories are related to Oneonta....kind of brings a tear to my eye when I think of Red's, the Sip N' Sail...Pizzaland Extension...those wonderful years of my youth...
