We had the same thing here Saturday night. Even the sound of the rain didn’t drown it out.

In all seriesness, yesterday afternoon was clear but very windy in the Raleigh area. Doing yard work, I kept hearing what sounded like rolling thunder.

We had a “thunderstorm”, and it definitely went “Boom !”
Not fooled for a moment by the sight of “lightning” in the sky, I began looking for my Acme UFO Detection Kit - but was unable to find it until this morning. (It was under the bed beneath which I had been hiding.)
Dang ! I had promised myself I would not worry about UFOs,or invaders from the Planet Yooknowhichwun,or Death Stars,or .....

I'm in Newport News. My son saw it last night and rushed inside to ask me about it. He didn't report any sounds, but he did say it was orange in hue trailing sparks, heading from southwest to northeast, and appeared to move towards the local horizon.
I didn't see it myself but, based on his report, I would tend to think this was a fireball i.e. a brighter than usual meteor.
