Boiling Mad: Crabs Feel Pain
YahooNews ^ | 03/27/09 | Robert Roy Britt

A favored method of preparing fresh crabs is to simply boil them alive. A longstanding related question: Do they feel pain? Yes, researchers now say. Not only do crabs suffer pain, a new study found, but they retain a memory of it (assuming they aren't already dead on your dinner plate). The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans. The study involved using wires to deliver shocks to the bellies of hermit crabs, which, being hermits, often take up residence in left-behind mollusc shells. The crabs that were shocked scampered out of their shells, "indicating that the experience is unpleasant for them," the scientists concluded; unshocked crabs stayed put. Another test was run to see what would happen if a mild shock was delivered, one just below the threshold that would cause the crabs to leave home. These mildly shocked crabs, along with crabs that had not been shocked, were then offered a new home. The typical reaction: They'd go inspect the new shell. Significantly, those that had been shocked were more likely to pack up and move to the new residence compared to those that hadn't been shocked. "There has been a long debate about whether crustaceans including crabs, prawns and lobsters feel pain," said study researcher Bob Elwood of Queen's University Belfast in the UK.

“The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans.”

Oh good God.

Screw them.

Frankly, I don’t care if they feel pain if I want to EAT them. It’s a moot point. It’s not long for boiling, anyway - and by then, they’re dead.

What about green tomatoes? I cut them up with no anesthetic, and fry them in hot oil.

What about radishes? I wash them in hot water, and cut off their roots!

Cry havoc and let loose the whalers!!!

Baleen whales eat crustaceans (shrimp) exclusively.

Nope. I eat lobster all the time. I just don't go out of my way to make it hurt it first.

What a depressing, messed-up woman you appear to be. Get help.

I am not going to be told by some linguine spined animal rights freak how to cook or kill my food. I eat oysters alive. They are chewed or slide whole down into stomach acid. Crabs, lobsters and other crustaceans are boiled or steamed and are dead very quickly. These studies are performed and funded with a predetermined conclusion, and for a predetermined reason.

You are free to think and post what you like, of course. Here's hoping next time you want to pretend you're more sensitive to crustacean death than anyone else, you choose someone else for your demonstration, and don't get snarky with me.

Actually, I think being EATEN alive is probably the worst.

There have always been cutesie Disney+ animal characters. That’s not the problem. The problem is the whole mindset from Dr. Spock days, lending them to stupid thinking.

Here's hoping you get some professional help and address your reflexive hostility, self-pity and bitterness. The people who have to put up with you in real life will thank you for it.

“Boil half in Old Bay and the other half in J.O.!”

Oh man, sacrilege...I can see a debate between Old Bay and J.O., but one does not ‘boil’ crabs...steam is the only way.

OH....I AGREE WITH YOU!, but the last couple of times I posted that same conclusion, the FR rabid response team went into action defending the misguided Dr.

Seems even some “Conservatives” swallowed hook, line and sinker Dr. Spocks tripe.

The cartoon characters I referenced IMO do apply to the problem as well though. Kids grow up in homes other than yours, or mine without appropriate input from their parents. This seems to me to be proven time and again as we read articles of idiots attempting to approach, pet wild animals only to be shocked by the animals aggression, or become extremely dead, and the animal demeaned, or killed for its unacceptable behavior.

‘Seems even some “Conservatives” swallowed hook, line and sinker Dr. Spocks tripe.’

Ironically, this is seen on the pet threads where half the population seems to think that even giving a dog a dirty look is “cruel”.

Plenty of “Republicans” have been too influenced by the pop-culture media never mind their own liberal neighbors. Peer pressure has made them believe the same garbage about never lay a finger on a kid or an animal, never train them because it might hurt their spirit, etc. You can see this generally in liberal states such as mine, where most Republicans are actually RINOs who go along with alot of liberal premises.

*sigh*

LOL - a world weary sigh from the depths of all that pain. Of course, people who are in real pain tend not to use it to try to score pity points in Internet forums.
