Senator Casey Withdraws as Commencement Speaker at St. Vincent’s College
Catholic Online ^ | 3/27/09 | Deacon Keith Fournier

Senator Bob Casey Jr. proclaims his pro-life credentials but fails to vote in a consistent manner to defend the fundamental right to life. He also missed an extraordinary opportunity to undo the injustice done to his father all those years ago at another Democratic Convention, when he spoke at the one in 2008. He failed to do so and many, including this writer, were deeply disappointed.

He has come under increasing criticism as he defends the Administrations indefensible anti-right to life agenda and is regularly rolled out as one of President Obama’s Catholic supporters.

Senator Casey has also been consistently and continually engaged by the Pro-Life community. Perhaps the strongest voice calling Senator Casey to consistency in his defense of life and fidelity to the teaching of the Catholic Church is his own Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton, Pa., the courageous Defender of Life who has captured the deep admiration of so many.

Now, the AP Reports that “A Catholic college in western Pennsylvania is scrambling to find another commencement speaker because U.S. Sen. Robert Casey, D-Pa., has canceled his May 9 appearance without explanation….St. Vincent College spokesman Don Orlando says Casey gave no reason for canceling. Casey spokesman, Larry Smar, also didn't give a reason in an e-mail response to questions from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

"Casey has been criticized by some conservative Catholic groups, including the Cardinal Newman Society, for his positions on federal funding of contraception and legalization of same-sex marriages. The Newman group protested when Casey spoke at Catholic University in 2006, where Casey received his law degree.”

Has Senator Casey decided he does not want to face the flood of protests which would accompany his address in light of the activities surrounding the invitation of President Obama to speak at Notre Dame? Was there a concern over the clear and courageous leadership of his own Bishop? Was he protecting his friend, the President, from possible ramifications such as another Catholic outcry against the administrations' anti-right to life positions?

Casey is a coward, and I can only guess his invisability is because he is being groomed for something else later.

Sort of like zero.

If I'm correct, we have no idea how large and powerful our enemy is.

Obammy should back out of Notre Dame, but he won’t because he REALLY WANTS THE FIGHT!! He knows that Satan is alive and well.

St. Vincent’s had George W. Bush as Commencement Speaker two or three years ago. The anti-war; NARAL; enviro-weenie types ‘protested’ (I personally think they were bussed in). Not many protesters at all, but I vaguely remember the President of SVU, on local TV proclaiming proudly that President Bush’ was an advocate for unborn Americans (or something close to that...it was a really, powerful quote).

Several friends whose kids were graduating from St. Vinnie’s all said how warm, laudatory (of the grads and their parents) the President was.

Good for SVU and Casey, to not make the graduation day about the speaker...and for him to pull out. I have to ask, what were they thinking?

Conversely, the year before that, my oldest graduated from Seton Hill University in Greensburg. The ‘honored’ Commencement Speaker was John Murtha. His anti-war, anti-military screed (and the ensuing booing; heckling) ruined the ceremony. My son said, he really wanted to get up and walk out (others in his row did as well) but he didn’t want to ‘disappoint’ his dad and I and not ‘walk.’ He was angry...and (luckily) got interviewed by media on his way out and vented (respectfully, but conservatively).

I'm unaware of any thing that Casey has done since his election that has not been straight down the demorat line. I called and wrote his office yesterday about the immaculate one’s budget. His office was polite but I might as well have been talking to the wall.

I just want to add one more thing about the SHU graduation. Members of the student community who questioned the invitation to Murtha were told what an advocate for the economy in SW Pa, yada yada. And that he would speak to that point. Wrong...he regurgitated his Larry King talking points. No grad walked out; as they really weren’t able to organize (sitting in their rows waiting to be called up). My son was just torn, as were many others, but having your family, cameras, etc., there made it an emotional ‘sit thru this so my mom can cry moment’ than anything else.

The average FReeper's opinion of Murtha is well known with few surprises from him in the past few years.

As far ad the junior Senator from Pennsylvania is concerned, he is not even the pimple on the A$$ of a real gentleman and leader like his late father and former Governor.

Disappointed

Bobby Casey’s dumber than a box of rocks.

Apparently so are Pennsylvania voters.

Maybe he canceled his speaking appearance because he can't string two coherent words together?

Casey's latest poll numbers has him at 30% in PA. He is the other half of our 2 stooge's senators. I am not sure which one is worse. Someone said he is dumb as a box of rocks. That is not fair to the rocks!!

I graduated from Seton Hill too. Now I feel better about ignoring their begging letters (they did a couple things my last semester to piss me off, and while I enjoyed my time there I feel my tuition was more than enough support for them for one lifetime).

If the young Senator Casey had had more exposure when he ran for the Senate, Pennsylvania would not have elected him. He is a less than an impressive speaker and does appear quite stupid. His father would be truly ashamed of his cowardice

I'm a Saint Vincent's grad, myself. I'm glad this dork dropped out. Whose idea was it to invite him in the first place?

He’s another empty suit who has scammed the dopey people in PA (present PAers excepted) to vote for him - and they do. And what’s up with PA anyway? Geez, Murtha, Rendell, Casey, Specter, etc - almost as bad as VA these days - M. Warner wanting to save costs by offing old people - yikes! that’s ME!

The next sound you hear (hopefully) will be Bishop Martino’s foot as it meets the posterior of this phony Catholic.
