BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A U.S. crackdown on European online gambling breaches World Trade Organization rules and would justify action at the World Trade Organization, the European Commission said on Thursday.

The European Union executive, which oversees trade policy for the 27-nation bloc, said its draft report found that such U.S.

laws hampered trade and thus were inconsistent with WTO rules but stressed it would seek a negotiated solution. "It is for the U.S. to decide how best to regulate Internet gambling in its market, but this must be done in a way that fully respects WTO obligations," EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton said in a statement.

Umm, I believe we have zero votes on the European Commission, unless there’s something I’m missing.

You are confusing the European Commission with the WTO. Read the article again.

Let me help: The EU (where we have no vote), is threatening to take this dispute to the WTO.

The WTO rules were setup in a treaty which was ratified by the Senate, so we are obligated to to follow them. They are enforced by a WTO court, so this has nothing to do with how many votes we have vs. the Euros. The WTO doesn’t prevent the US from regulating or taxing gambling, but it does prevent the US from setting up regulations or taxes favorable to American gambling interests over foreign gambling interests. The US has already lost a WTO decision for this very same practice once before. Antiqua won the right to retaliate against the US because of gambling protectionism several years ago. We haven’t come into compliance since that decision and will most likely lose again.

Thank your local America-Hating, Free Trading Liberal Globalist for this one.

You sign treasonous Free Trade deals....and you get the Euro’s running your economy....or the COMMUNIST Chinese.

Free Trade Globalism is the major threat to national security and national soverignity

And what is the name of this “treaty” that we signed with the WTO?

There is not treaty....we agreeed to join...there is no treaty

Constitutionally....we are not obligated to follow an “agreement”.....also, all treaties have one thing in common....they are made to be broken.

Those who value Free Trade over national soverignty are committing treason.

Knee-jerk? Hmm better than the usual whiny liberal “Free trade is more important than committing treason” line

By the way....the Euros have a lot more votes in the WTO than the US...and the US always loses in the anti-American WTO

. . . and the US always loses in the anti-American WTO.

Never bothered to actually find out, I see. That's the thing about knee-jerk reactions . . . no need to exercise the brain at all.

They do betray ignorance of the subject matter, though.

It's silly that we drove our internet poker sites off-shore. Just silly.

(And pointing it out doesn't make one a "traitor.")
