WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has no illusions about the 2008 White House race.
"God bless them," McCain said Thursday at the Heritage Foundation when reminded of the tens of millions of people who voted for him last year.
"Over 50 million people voted for me and Sarah Palin - mostly for Sarah Palin," McCain said to an eruption of laughter. But "there was a sizable majority of the other party returned to Congress. And, elections have consequences. Elections have consequences. And these consequences we are seeing now in full display."

I would not have voted for McCain, if not for Sarah, because I had hopes that we could overcome the consequences of 0bama, and I was certain that the Republican Party would never overcome the consequences of McCain. At least now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for the Republican Party, providing the “intellectuals” (their description, not mine) don’t screw it up by trying to liberalize conservatism.
LOL!!
I would have turned off the TV just as quickly when he showed up as I do when obama opens his mouth.
We had no good choices.
He should have been saying this all along, and not wait until almost 5 months after the election to admit it.
I’m sure Meghan McCain will come out with a slice and dice opinion about how Palin actually lost the election for her father.
Who would have voted for McCain if he had chosen Lieberman, Ridge or Pawlenty as his running mate, or even Guilliani.
I voted for Sarah Palin, and I will vote for her when she runs for President too..She will always have my vote :-)
If it hadn’t been for Sarah, I would have stayed home.
Methinks the good Senator should give his daughter a call...
No fan of McCain, but I appreciate that comment a lot. He treated her bad by remaining silent immediately after election day, but this comment may be his way of saying that he knows she was a huge draw.
That said, John, his daughter and the other Dem-lites in the party need to get out of the way so some real conservatives step up and take the lead to build some name recognition.
Yeah. Palin made me vote for McCLame.
It is too bad McCain didn’t figure this out in October and send Sarah to represent him in the last two debates.
one vote for Sarah here.
If we had had Thompson/Palin we wouldn’t have the messiah right now.
He’s flippin’ a-tweety on that one! I’d have flushed him after Iowa and beyond -anytime up to November 4...NEVER, EVER, NEVER WANT TO HEAR THIS ASSHOLE’S NAME AGAIN!
My God, what a loon.
He knew that we were voting for her and not for his policies before the election.
Hello. Ding-Dong nobody home.
No, he wouldn't have, because all of us would have stayed home on election day. Sarah boosted the ticket by a minimum of 10 points.
Where did McCain give his speech? The article noted that they gave him a standing ovation. Who are these idiots?
The Heritage Foundation.
Oh he’s a sly one. He implying he lost because people voted for Sarah and not him.
I hope he explains this to his chubby daughter.
