There is a video as well. The cop has since been assigned to desk duty.

Traffic duty isn’t there for your safety...just your money.

I’ll have to remember that mother-in-law story

And a lot of FR posters think the cops are on our side when it comes to the 2nd Amendment. Think again.

"You really want to go through this right now?" Moats pleaded. "My mother-in-law is dying. Right now!"

How is the cop supposed to know that this isn't just another in a long line of excuses?

Just playing devils advocate here, folks.

Time for Robert Powell and the Dept. to both cough up some money and for Robert Powell to enjoy some time being a Nazi meter maid. There are good cops and then there are those like Robert Powell who make all cops look bad and make a difficult job even more difficult.

Sad story. I don’t know that race was involved. Maybe. But I’ve had a few a$$hole cops in my day too.

Some people go into law enforcement for the wrong reasons. However, I wonder if Moats had his hazard lights on? I had an emergency once, and a cop saw my lights, and escorted me to the hospital with his lights on. Good cop versus bad cop.

The cop was heavy-handed but the guy ran a red light. If there were a car coming in the other direction, there could have been more fatalities than the already sick/dying mother in law.

In the rush to garner one more ticket toward his monthly quota and improve bottom line revenue ...er, I mean, protect and serve the officer could have escorted the SUV to the hospital, checked out the story and then, given a ticket.

But then, that might have taken an additional 10 busy minutes of his day or something ...

We need more Andy Taylors in law enforcement and a helluva lot fewer Barney Fifes.

rolled through a red light

Sort of understandable.

Some of those intersection lights take about 8 minutes to cycle through.

NFL...
Put your spouse in a cab...
Or she walks right into to the hospital... to be with her dear Mom....

Spouse wasn't driving... problem solved...

Moats broke the law & the cop was out-of-line = double jeopardy...

Reassign the cop to city vice squad duty for a couple of weeks. It’ll change his attitude pretty quickly.

Several years ago the battery on a lawnmower blew up in my face filling my eyes with acid. I managed to get in the house and called my buddy who lived nearby. He rushed over and rushed me to the hospital. Enroute we were pulled over. My friend pleaded with the police to get me to the hospital, but he paid no attention and left me sitting in the truck with my eyes on fire! Finally after 45 minutes, he called an ambulance for me and wrote my friend a speeding ticket.

Next day I went and saw thw chief of police of the town and he told me to tell my friend to tear up the ticket, but explained to me that even though you have an emergency, you still must follow the law. He was right.

When is it permissible to run a functioning red light? Not sure in other jurisdictions but even emergency vehicles with sirens and lights have to stop or slow down enough to check before running a red in my neck of the woods.

First, this cop acted like a butthead. Not anything new here.

Second, a wannabe celebrity brazenly broke multiple traffic laws and had an excuse when stopped by law enforcement. Not anything new here either.

In hindsight it's clear the athlete was telling the truth . . . but if YOU were the officer who just saw this guy drive through a redlight would you initially assume this celeb was telling the truth? That said, assuming the article is accurate, this cop is a complete a$$hole and more than a little dense as it should have taken about 10 seconds to realize the athlete was being honest.

Some people are just punks and giving them a badge makes it worse.

you are allowed to speed through red lights at intersections now if someone is in the hospital??

and if they had been hit by a semi at that intersection?
