ROMNEY: Cautionary tale of card check Mitt Romney Wednesday, March 25, 2009

** FILE ** Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Mr. Romney submitted a column to The Washington Times as part of the Reinventing Conservatism series. (Astrid Riecken/The Washington Times)

ANALYSIS/OPINION: (Part of our Reinventing Conservatism series)

In 2006, my last year as governor of Massachusetts, I vetoed a card-check bill that allowed public workers to organize if a majority signed union authorization cards as opposed to casting a traditional secret ballot. The veto was a gain for the rights of employees and employers to a fair election, but the victory was short-lived.

no. I don’t protest. If you guys are going to shoot at me, I am not going to walk away. This is self defense. Something that a true conservative believes in.

...I want to give Mitt the benefit of the doubt regarding his change over the last couple of years...but really, for me to ever actively support him, several years of him standing by those new positions, particularly as regards abortion, are going to have to go by when he does so with no hope or attachment to higher office...

I think it is his state of mind over all. As a diligent Mormon, he is striving toward godhood, in his mind. If he can believe that, he is useless to me. He is not grounded on earth. His religion IS why I couldn't accept him.

I am hoping for Sarah Palin, with Michelle Bachmann as a Vice-Pres. If the roles were reversed, they would still lead the pack. Their lives define "conservative"! As a WASP male, I define "chauvinist"! Yes, they are both women!

They have more balls than all the bull Rino's in Washington!

Cmon, Reagan Man, there are a plenty of Romney fans here that are pretty darn conservative. I think the reason why they support Romney, is that they are willing to believe that his road to Des Moines conversion on myriad topics is genuine. And, generally speaking, they believe his spin on his record that he governed conservatively. I can't claim to know Romney's true thoughts, but I guess that a legit conversion is a possibility.

As you know, I have no use for the guy, and if he runs again, which seems likely, he won't be getting my support. But to think you can't be conservative and support the guy is simply not true.

BTW, Hunter/Pence 2012.

Thank you VR for standing up for yourself and asking for proof as to which you were not included in my stated:

I love how you guys are calling me all sorts of nastiness based on a one positive comment and one thread!

You are correct YOU VR were not an attacker and I appreciate your calling me out on that as well as including your clear reasons for not supporting Romney

I must say the only thing I think that is heresay and very well can be reserved as rumors or a campaign against him is the situation you stated about Sarah Palin. If this is true I feel similarly to you. If not I will pass it off as either questionable or untrue if not proven.

As much as I like Huckabee personally, I felt he was openly malicious towards Romney and mean spirited. He sort of ganged up with McCain and we all know how 'conservative,' and able to communicate well McCain is . . . NOT!! We also know the outcome and that in and of itself is devastating. This insured McCain winning as our party representative.

McCain was a limp piece of pre-chewed RINO meat most of the general election campaign. Basically worthless, inarticulate, unable to fight for conservative principles. Now Romney may be a RINO, but I still think he had fight and whether he was speaking out of both sides of his mouth or not HE COULD SPEAK and at times clearly and intelligently so. You have to admit he didn't look on a daily basis like he needed to be on life support against Obama. I am still shaking my head at the fact that McCain became the GOP candidate. The guy pretty much threw the election and the only good thing about McCain was his bringing Governor Palin into our national politics.

I really liked Fred, unfortunately Fred had to drop out early and sadly did not have that visual energy and charisma in competition amongst the rest that could easily have propelled him forward if he had.

>>>>>>Mitt is the only one who could have possibly beaten Obama. I do not care who hates me for it, I wish Mitt would have won our primary .... He is the man that would have done a fantastic job as president .... Flame away.

You asked for it, you got it! Problem, you're thin skinned. Whining to management after you begged to be flamed shows what a cry baby you are. If you misguided WillardBots kept your adulation for him off Free Republic there would be no need for some Freepers to keep knocking down all the dumb posts you all come up with on a daily basis. And if Jim wants to keep you around for fun, I'm all for it.

I am not thin skinned. I defend myself against false accusation. This is exactly what Sarah Palin is spending half a million dollars doing as well. She is defending herself against false accusation and frivolous lawsuits. If she ran away from it or put her tail between her legs and went home and hid in Alaska never to be heard from again that might be either just disgust (understandable) or thin skinned as you accused me of.

I got it and I have stuck it out. Toed the line, when necessary and took big risks for big pay off. That is not thin skinned my FRiend that is stones and although I am a lady. I got 'em. Notice I am still here to show 'em. 'nough said.

I told you last year, you lost any credibility with me when you kept consistently attacking the #1 candidate supported by this forum and his supporters -— Fred and the FredHeads. Jim even gave you a time out or two for your mindless efforts along those lines. Those on the right who chose to back Giuliani, Romney or Paul were traitors to the conservative cause. Sell-outs! This poster you took to defend, is a liberal troll. Nuff said.

You’re not only a liberal troll, you’re delusional to boot.

If you want to hang around to promote, defend and support Willard, I’ll be happy to take you on and knock you down. Its always fun slamming you liberals. LOL

I don’t care about losing credibility to a guy who supported a Bakerite over a Reaganite. But I do care about the truth. And There are plenty of Romney fans that are conservative, plenty that aren’t. I was certainly involved as much as anyone here exposing Rudy McRomney’s records. Just so happened it morphed into Rudy McThomney after McCain’s stalking horse jumped in.

I did not whine to management. You posted Jim's comment as did another first. I merely asked that they one ping him if he is to be included and two asked if they have a point of view to articulate it themselves.

Heck I am doing the conservative movement a favor. If we can't articulate our point of view intelligently we don't have a chance. I am merely asking these people to be good conservatives and learn to fight (and with principled dialog as you can't convince others when you are treating them like dog do-do)

Still name calling I see. Positive opinions in small does in which you do not agree should be seen for you as an opportunity to intelligently argue your point. If you believe he is so bad then for God's sake, remember this site is perused by millions and use intelligent disagreement. When you act like a parrot and a jerk, people do not take you seriously. Are you just preaching to the converted? Too bad as we are also having to preach outside our 'church' to win future elections and to clarify and articulate conservative values and solutions.

People other than fellow FReepers read these threads. Do you want to make a difference of not? If you want to convince GOP people to not vote for RINOs then make your argument. Jim has created a truth file to back up his stand. In the least you could have just simply made an intelligent point and provided the link to the truth file and moved on. Otherwise this thread is clogged up with all this ancillary stuff and helps no one.

There is a time to play offense on selling our values and time to play defense on selling our values. Right now to me is an offensive time and we need the tools in which to do this effectively. You need to brush up a bit in my opinion or will you just selfishly go on attacking others and chasing people away?

And if Jim wants to keep you around for fun, I'm all for it.

I do not claim to know Jim's mind or his motivations. I asked him squarely to support a zot against me and suspend me if he saw me as a liberal troll and all the etcs you have called me. He did not. His action states for itself that he does not agree with your assessment.

When Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke testified about the AIG bailout at a House hearing on Tuesday, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota was among those questioning them. She pressed them about what authority the Constitution granted for actions taken by the Treasury Department and the Fed in the past year.

I know plenty of good, conservative LDS people who would and do make excellent candidates, who love and believe in, and defend the constitution and the values and faith that define it.

I say this as an individual who was raised a southern Baptist and who is now a card carry LDS myself...and who is not looking to make this thread a theological discussion.

My own history on this fourm and my involvement in numerous activities speaks for itself without my religion having to define it for me.

You have good and bad apples in every persuasion. Just as there are good Catholics, good Baptists, good Methodists, good Evangelicals, etc. who would make excellent Presidential candidates, despite whatever differences they may have in interpretation, there are also good LDS folks of the same ilk. There also extremely bad exmples in each persuasion as we have all seen.

But, as I stated, though as a person I will give him the benefit of doubt and allow God to judge his heart, Romney has lots of ground to make up, and proof to establish before I will bank on his "change" being genuine and not motivated out of desire to attain office.

I know this, though I supported 1st Hunter and then Thompson at the time, had Romney won out and it been him versus Obama, I would have voted for him over Obama.

My money and hopes right now are also on Sarah Palin. She has walked the walk, and the liberals hate her for it.

Her very personna and life story are the enigma and posion to the liberal/socialist/marxist way and people who hear and come to know of her, are drawn to her. They are scared of her and she proved what she can do, even after being the VP candidate on McCain's losing ticket, when she helped lift the Georgia Senator over the top after the election.

I expect we are going to see a lot more of that in 2010 and 2012 and I look forward to it.

GO SARAH GO!

HOW SARAH PALIN TRUMPS LIBERALISM

Yes, but it is odd for one who is speaking of conservatism to have to defend supporting one who has given it little more than lip service historically.

Understand there were and are a lot of Mitt sycophants here, some may well be paid given their efforts and uniform approach. They were and are particularly deceitful and persistent, attacked other conservatives both directly and indirectly here on FR. From that there has been a growing animosity since the primaries towards their on going efforts.

If you have gotten caught up in all of that, then I am sincerely sorry, but again understand that for many of us here, after all his ‘supporters” have done and said about some very good and very real conservatives, even the mention of Mitt and “Conservative” in the same breath is pause for thought and reaction.

Complement Mitt if you wish, and like one other poster said he would be a much better choice than Obama, but don't then tell those of us that oppose Mitt we would prefer Obama or the like out of the gate and expect hugs and kisses from those who invest in our principals a wee bit deeper.
