Actually, yes, you little 8 year old grandchildren DO have to participate. The program has two sections. One for Primary and Elementary age children, one for middle, highschool and college.
So poo poo it all you want. But your children are no less exempt than any of ours are.

It would be a good idea to read the legislation before you make that judgement. The bill is aimed toward mandatory involvement by schoolchildren in public school and kids in college. It was listed as mandatory on Obama’s original whitehouse page then sanitized once word got around but the bill is still aimed in that direction.
The attached amendment says what it says. If it is truly “mandatory volunteerism” (an oxymoron) then this is close to Nazi Germany. Take a look at the news...
