Can Private Security Guards Act As Cops? That's Exactly What They May Soon Be Doing On The Far South Side

. . . private security cars patrol Michigan Avenue between 100th and 116th streets, and a proposed city ordinance would give them many police powers. CBS

They're private security guards, already on patrol, but they may soon have the powers of Chicago Police officers.

As CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports, the private security officers now on patrol on the city's Far South Side are expected to have their powers expanded as part of a citywide ordinance now being prepared

“Somebody just watch “Robocop” and think it was real?”

Robocop is not real; Robocop is the future. (as nervous laugh trails off to uh . . . hmmmm. . . .)

This is a terrible precedent for a representative government facing bankruptcy.

The police will do the bidding of the creditors, not the people.

Ah, yes; returning to the days of yesteryear when the railroad men and cattle ranchers employed their own “private security personnel” to “police the open range.” Frees-up the town Sheriffs and the Marshals for more important, pressing, “larger things,” while the more menial labors of keeping those sodbusters and sheepfolk in their rightful places, doncha know.

“And then he spit in the dust, looked up, and muttered, ‘I reckon I'm a’workin’ for whoever it is that owns the bunkhouse where I sleep and fills me and Old Paint's belly.’ “

From the article:

“No traffic violations such as moving violations – such as moving violations. Small things – illegally parked, blocking the parking,” said Ald. Anthony Beale (9th).”

From the article:

“That wasn’t exactly what Mayor Daley thought when he was asked about it on Saturday. He said the security force would have the power to enforce “moving violations and citations including loitering, littering and graffiti.”

lol
