In their continuing quest to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, state regulators have uncovered a new villain in the war on global warming : your big screen TV
Couch potatoes, beware.
The California Energy Commission is considering a proposal that would ban California retailers from selling all but the most energy-efficient televisions. Critics say the news standards could take 25 percent of televisions off the market most of them 40 inches or larger.
(snip)
Affordable big screen TVs will still be available under the new standards, spokesman Adam Gottlieb said. In fact, he said the regulations will save you money.
The commission calculates that if you buy televisions meeting the proposed standards itll cut your annual energy use by drum roll, please $18 to $30.
I dont know anyone who doesnt like to save money, Gottlieb said.
Gottlieb said the commission is exploring the regulations to reduce the strain on the energy grid and to avoid building new power plants.
Televisions are the fastest growing consumer appliance in California. Californians are buying bigger TVs, and more of them. If something doesnt happen, televisions are going to devour a bigger and bigger piece of the states power grid, which means well need more power plants. More power plants mean more greenhouse gas emissions.
Consumers arent aware of the hidden cost of powering these things, Gottlieb said.
Gottlieb insisted that the regulations wouldnt eliminate big screens from California stores. But the commissions own draft report says TV energy use is proportional to the screen size. And theres no doubt the regulations will limit energy use.
That was the result of Prop 65, the "Clean Water Act," IIRC.
I live in Cali & I’m hear to tell ya there will be no repercussions at all for the hippies in Sacramento. The vast majority of Californians are sheep.
<Consumers arent aware of the hidden cost
Maybe they are aware and have decided to carry the cost. Or don’t we get to choose anymore?
Yep... it was Prop 65.
If you’d like to see the 18 page list of chemicals requiring warnings, here ya go!

Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted as a ballot initiative in November 1986. The Proposition was intended by its authors to protect California citizens and the State’s drinking water sources from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, and to inform citizens about exposures to such chemicals.
Over my husband’s dead body! We’ll be going over state lines to buy the next television for this house.
There are already checkpoints on the Cali border to check for fruits and vegetables (this is to keep parasites from entering the state. Too bad it isn't applied to human parasites.)
They could easily be tasked to check for plasma TVs as well.
title wasn’t even close - but it’s a good followup to yours
I mentioned on another thread that “liberalism is an invasive species.”
If only we could eradicate that! :-)
I sense a bailout is coming for TV manufacturers.
FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!!
I can’t believe that it took 30 posts to see those words!!!
And having a sign on every building in San Diego does this how?
They will arrest you for driving with a big screen television in your car. You can’t buy a 40 inch television but buying an ounce of weed is no problem.
Well, just like every other liberal program, it doesn’t! You might have also seen those signs in parking garages (like people don’t know that inhaling car fumes for extended periods might not have a negative effect.)
But then again... look at all the good business opportunities those signs created! JOBS!

(Yes... this post includes heavy sarcasm)
They are not touching my toaster!
And they do such a fabulous job. What a freakin’ waste of taxpayer money. You pull up to the booth, they ask, “do you have any fruits or vegetables?” You say “no” and you drive on through. You could have a whole trunk full and they wouldn’t stop you.
Wonder what the green shirts would think of my 110” TV?
Freaking busy body morons.
Oh that one is too easy. That would be a "User Fee."
