About 500 people gathered in downtown Lexington on Saturday to protest government spending as part of a national event.
The protest, in front of the Fayette County District Court, is part of the series of Tax Day Tea Party events occurring across the nation. Organizers have also planned protests in Bowling Green and Louisville slated for April 15, the day taxes are due.
Participants at the rally displayed signs, dressed in costume and brought packets of tea, which were collected to be sent to Gov. Steve Beshears office.
Speakers at the rally included local businesspeople, State Rep. Stan Lee, R-Lexington, and attorney Gatewood Galbraith. The rally was sponsored by resistnet.com, the Kentucky Club for Growth and local talk radio station WLAP-AM 630.
Much of the focus was on President Barack Obama and the most recent stimulus package passed by the Democrat-controlled Congress, although the rally was not exclusively Republican. Many protesters simply labeled themselves conservative.
David Adams, a writer for the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions and the master of ceremonies at the rally, said he didnt think President Obamas spending has been different from his predecessors.
Thats where this movement is different, Adams said. George Bush did the same thing to us for eight years. This goes way beyond Democrat and Republican.
Chad Patterson, a Lexington resident, called the recent bill passed by the U.S. House, which taxes bonuses given to top executives of companies who received government bailout funds, unconstitutional.
He also said he was tired of tax raises.
Hes taxing everybody at a higher percentage to give it to people who dont deserve it, Patterson said.
Please plan to attend, bring a friend or 2 or 10

Would like to join this ping list.
Done and welcome.
But better putting efforts to that than "Tea Partys" that no one is paying attention to. BTW, I have been a leader and follower at many street activities in the past. Having that experience and watching our Country quickly slide into socialism, I will tell you such activities are falling on deaf ears.
Personally, I am in a holding pattern...think what you will. Best.
Awesome, Islander!!! Looks great!! I heard from Julia (Smartgirlpolitics) and she said the April 15th event is heating up for JXN, MS.
Looks like we will have some good turn-out.
I have been posting this graphic and pushing the T.E.A. Party on Glenn Beck’s group. I’ll be attending their meeting Friday night. Should get the word out 300 folks that way.
I’m going to look and see if there are Glenn Beck groups up here.
