4 cops shot, suspect dead after Calif. traffic stop
Police say suspect behind two separate shootings involving officers
OAKLAND, Calif. - Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.
Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.
The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies.
Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.

“Oakland Plans Evening Vigil As 4th Officer Dies”
CBS 5 SAN FRANCISCO ^ | 24 MARCH 2009 | AP

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / AP / BCN):
SNIPPET: “The city of Oakland prepared to gather in grief Tuesday evening after a fourth police officer shot by a man wanted on a parole violation was taken off life support.
A major city thoroughfare, 74th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, was set to be closed down for the 6 p.m. vigil at the street corner where Officer John Hege and another officer were shot Saturday during a traffic stop.
Hege was taken off life support Monday night and his heart, liver and kidneys removed, said Andrea Breaux of Alameda County Medical Center. The 41-year-old officer had been declared brain dead Sunday, but the hospital kept him on life support so his organs could be donated, in keeping with his wishes.”
SNIPPET: “Prison and court records show Mixon, 26, had served nearly five years in state prison for assault with a firearm during an armed robbery in San Francisco. More recently, he served several months in prison last year for a parole violation.
Mixon also was a suspect in a December 2007 murder but was never charged because of lack of evidence, officials said.”
KFI reported last night that Mixon had also been ID’d as the prime suspect in a recent rape as a result of a DNA test. They reported that under California law, the fact that the DNA from the rape matched the DNA on file with the state wasn’t sufficient to allow police to arrest and charge him with rape. State law required yet another DNA test.
Not surprising and I thank you for the additional info behzinlea.
