OAKLAND -- Four Oakland police officers were shot and seriously wounded this afternoon after a car stop went bad, police sources reported.

Two of the officers were gunned down outside their patrol car after they pulled over a car in the 7400 block of MacArthur Boulevard, not far from the Eastmont Town Center. Another officer reported was shot while in pursuit of the suspect. It was not clear where the fourth officer was shot. A suspect was later reported to also have been shot.

Sadly, it appears the Coroner is there for all five.

Sounds like a traffic stop may have stumbled on a serious gang banger, will be curious what gang and what will be done?

Oakland recently has done a lot of recruiting of new officers to try to rebuild a police presence to combat the disintegration of the city the last few years. I fear some of those involved are recent arrivals to the force.

My daughter’s fiance is on the Oakland police force. He was off this weekend but got called into work tonight. It is a thankless and dangerous job.

Thanks for the title edit.

I dropped this in FRontpage.

The families of the officers will need lots of prayer and support in the coming days in light of this terrible tragedy.

I think I’ve been through the bad area. An eon ago I used to ride the bus from NAS Alameda through the Webster tube to catch another bus at 14th & Boadway downtown to the Transbay Terminal in SF (I had a girlfriend who worked at Sutter Station Tavern at Market & Sutter then). I accepted a ride once from some civilians who turned kind of weird, and I had them drop me off in an area that had me pretty spooked as I walked for about than an hour back towards the buildings downtown. I didn’t have any real problems, but a few of the locals couldn’t help but notice me and gave the most cordial greetings and wished me well. Not a good memory. A good one is being in Jack London Square when the A’s won The Series.

Not downtown, not along 98th.

I know a kid who’s brother is on the Oakland police force. They’re supposed to be some bad-ass dudes. It is surprising to hear that someone took out four of them.

This is no way to react to a traffic stop- even if you suffer from 'pull-over' fatigue. The Cops don't need this crap. Before you know it, we'll all be exiting our cars on our knees with hands clasped behind our heads at every traffic infraction.

I have a better idea: Let's legalize dope, tax it, and put dope dealers out of business. That's one.

Let's allow The People to carry like they've never 'carried' before. That's two. The guns are there. The people are there. What's the hold-up? THE STATE- "Hands up, this here is a Bill of Rights robbery."

So, thugs sell drugs, cops get shot, and life goes on.

Liberty is the anti-biotic that can heal the body if taken according to directions. And, it won't come with the many ugly side-effects that many pharmacueticals induce.

The families of these officers shouldn't be going through what they currently are. Somebody's daddy or mommy is in the hospital hanging onto life. And, they needn't be. They need to be in our prayers.

The Clash between the STATE and the INDIVIDUAL can be kept to a minimum. It was the work of some pretty smart dudes. Every deviation from the path they blazed will come back to harm us. And we witness that harm every day. Becoming de-sensitized to it is no excuse for laxity.

An engine needs it's oil changed about every 3000 mi. to get the most out of it. A country elects a new president every four years (eight, if they're synthetic) to get the most out of it. What this means is: we have a chance to 'correct' course quickly if'n the country is about to 'hit the ditch'.

We've had a couple of wheels in the ditch since Reagan. The front-end has been in the ditch since LBJ. These clowns do gun control- this car will flip end-over-end.

Thks for the chance to rant, Normy. ;^)

A trained and motivated individual with a rifle can be extremely dangerous.

You know the logic. If strict gun laws don’t prevent a tragedy, it only means that you need to clamp down harder. Repeat until absurd.

My sympathy to all their families. I guess this is Obama’s Hope and Change manifesting itself in Oakland!

Do we know whether the gunman was transported to the hospital? Another possibility.

Not sure what body armor these officers were wearing but that will likely be one thing we could spend more on for their safety and should, it is a jungle out there.

"It is surprising to hear that someone took out four of them."

A firearm can't choose it's owner. Even a two legged rat can pull a trigger, and heaven knows they can be cunning.

I wonder if the perp was using an FN 5.7? What else could consistently punch body armor vests? It'd be odd if none of the officers were wearing vests.

I bet that pistol's off the market if this turns out to be the case (even though their illegal here in CA already)...

My respects to them both, and may God watch over them. May they also know of those who their labor, fear and sacrifice has protected. May the people of that city someday get fed-up with the vermin who now flourish in their streets, courthouses and city hall. God how I long for the days when cockroaches were afraid to come out of the woodwork!
