Pictures of hunger: Photo project captures the life of those in need [Where are the fathers?]
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | March 1, 2009 | Pauline Arrillaga

... she makes chicken for her children but eats Oodles of Noodles herself...

... She is 29, with twin babies and a toddler, facing eviction because she's $300 behind on rent...

... The little girl, 15-16 months old, wears a striped top that swallows her tiny arms. Her nose is runny, her eyes empty. Hers is not the picture of hunger that Americans are accustomed to seeing. She isn't emaciated, like those living in squalid conditions in famine-stricken countries, but she is underweight and malnourished, often fed chips and sugary drinks instead of milk and formula...

... poor diets lacking in fruits and vegetables, in children who are fed fatty, cheap foods like hot dogs or ramen noodles...

... Even before the economy tanked, some 36 million adults and children struggled with hunger in 2007...

... She doesn't pity herself, not when she gives her kids hot-dogs because that's all she can afford, not each and every day that she goes without breakfast. Not on this day, when she has yet to put a single morsel in her mouth. Years ago, when the hunger was almost too much to bear, she learned a trick: She'd flip through takeout menus to look at pictures of the food and, eventually, just looking was enough to diminish her cravings.

... one of her 2-year-old, his arm outstretched, asking her welfare case officer for something to eat...

... Foodstuff hidden behind piles of clothes so it's not eaten too fast....

This article cites many examples of hungry children in the U.S., but it doesn't say anything about any of their fathers.

We fought a War on Poverty.

Poverty won.

This is what the socilaist state has created. True to the definition of insanity, they still look to government as the solution.

We may not be the third world but we’re at 2.5 and gaining on it! IMHO

she gives her kids hot-dogs because that's all she can afford,

Try beans and rice, lady. Cheaper and healthier. Watch your pennies and you can splurge on salsa.

With Subway's 5-dollar foot longs, you can feed yourself for ten bucks a day, tops. They're nutritionally balanced, except for, say, fruit, and they're low in fat. But yeah, where the heck are the dads? Or should we say, sperm donors?

Does she give any of her own money? Not just “project” money? Does she support any church’s food program?

The term 'food insecurity' is used in the article. This is the current dodge that gets around the fact that the people the researcher or journalist is writing about are not actually going without food. They are just worried about the possibility. It's akin to changing the term 'global warming' to 'climate change' so whatever alarmist nonsense you wish to espouse about the subject is 'true'.

You know, another way to look at this subject would be something like, "Isn't it great we have food stamps and many other programs to help people in need?" But of course, we never hear that from the left, so we?

I'll state the obvious. Bullsh#t on the "hunger".

This lady could use a couple of months in Kenya where there are REAL hungry people.

I just wish we had a network or reporter that would follow these "examples" around and just really document the WASTE of money and time these parasites use up.

I love when they go to the "food" lines and these people go home to cable tv, cell phones and nice tennis shoes. What a crock.

The Anglo American accumulated enormous wealth since the end of WWII. The Third World wants that wealth. “The Divine One” has promised the Third World that wealth. He is starting the transfer process through taxes, mortgage payments, “infra structure improvements” etc. etc.. Soon the woman in the photo shall be driving a Lexus. The Anglo American’s wives and children shall be in the street. Remember Reich said they are not going to make a bunch of white construction workers wealthy(Probably paraphrased)However now that I think of it, we can rejoice as we have found the joy of “Diversity!”

What’s wrong with hot dogs? Kids love them. They’re cheap protein.

What does she want, steak?

BTW, beans and rice have nowhere near the nutritional value of hot dogs.

Beans have fiber and they are low fat. Hot dogs are loaded with fat and salt. A steady diet of them will make anyone sick.

“ 36 million adults and children struggled with hunger in 2007..”

IMHO- Complete BS

No way that many people are struggling with hunger on a regular basis This country has more government benefits, more programs, more help from non profit organization that anybody needs to go hungry

My wife works at the largest grocery store chain in the world and sees on a daily basis people who get literally 1000 to 1800 a month in food benefits

I know hunger exists but it is mosty self induced by being a drug or achocol abuser or an ignorant social parisite

Very few people are not getting help if they need truly need it

When was the last time you read the ingredients on the cheapest hot dogs? And this lady is not feeding the kids, she’s feeding herself.

The human body can’t live on incomplete vegetable protein. Hot dogs contain complete animal protein. Lots of it. Beans do not. Hot dogs are one of many sources of cheap protein. Eggs, chicken, peanut butter-all cheap protein.

A couple hot dogs chopped up into a can of beans, some corn cobettes, and a few slices of whole wheat bread make a fine meal for a family.
