I think he will run, but the polls I’ve seen say Boxer is way ahead of him and other potential candidates. Guess CA really has gone Marxist ...sad to say...
There was little that Wilson could do. The ‘Rats had total control over most of state government. George Deukmajein had a similar dilemna.
I looked up how Reagan's hometown of Dixon had voted in the Congressional race, and it confirmed what I suspected. They voted AGAINST Bill Foster (the lone Democrat to win that district in many decades), as did 2/3rds of the district, so your crow is served. Your are correct that the demographics of the district are changing, and the big city in the district, Aurora, is largely hispanic now and voted Dem. However, the area that REAGAN himself lived in(Lee County) from is still strongly Republican. I didn't check to see if Reagan's neighborhood in California voted against their marxist Congressman (Waxman) but given the left-wing loons they elected to the assembly, I think it's safe to guess they strongly supported Waxman.
Yes, there are millions of Reagan Republicans in California, and yes there a strong section of conservative Republicans in southern California, but not in the neighborhoods Reagan LIVED in! The bottom line is that Dixon, Illinois loudly and proudly proclaims itself "Hometown of Ronald Reagan", but the liberals in Bel Air and Pacific Palisades would probably shudder at the mere mention of the name of their former neighbor. You see any of those places advertising the fact Reagan lived there? Nope.
Reaganism is alive and well in places in Illinois that he called home, and if you visited here, you'd see that. You won't learn about Reaganism from the Hollyweird crowd. Arnie is proof of that.

So, given those facts -- what places are doing a better job keeping the spirit of Reaganism alive?
The towns he grew up in, OR his adopted towns where he spent his adulthood?
He's not living there now.
I looked up how Reagan's hometown of Dixon had voted in the Congressional race, and it confirmed what I suspected. They voted AGAINST Bill Foster
No numbers given. Understandable given Foster the leftist took the district with votes from Dixon and now enjoys the praises of Jim Burke, the mayor of Dixon.
http://www.foster08.com/2008/10/rep_foster_serv.html
Reagan was a liberal Democrat when he lived there. He wasn't able to overcome the liberal indoctrination he received in Dixon until he moved to (and spent the vast majority of his adult life in) California. Dixon almost robbed us of a conservative Reagan.
BillyBoy: Bel Air, Hollywood, L.A., Pacific Palisades, Sacramento, and San Francisco were "the face of conservatism"?? You've GOT to be kidding me. Orange county and San Diego are the conservative parts of southern California and Reagan never lived a day in his life there. Hollywood was overrun with left-wing commie sympathizers in the 50s (who were all mad at Reagan for "betraying" them by ratting them out and agreeing with Congress that Hollywood is filled with anti-American leftists), just like it is today. Reagan was a conservative in a sea of liberalism.
Okay, I'll pipe in with my opinion here.
Mojave said Southern California, which would exclude San Francisco and Sacramento so you can drop those out of the discussion. Bel Air, Pacific Palisades, West Los Angeles, Brentwood, and others were definitely NOT liberal enclaves and had tons of conservatives. They tended to house the affluent business people (which were much more numerous when we still manufactured things here), scattered with a few movie stars, here and there. Hollywood... well, that's always been a different story. Folks were a bit quieter about their politics back then but I remember going to lots of Republican/Governor Reagan fundraisers as a kid, usually recruited to sell raffle tickets to the attendees (big formal affairs at one mansion or another). As such, you got to know who many of the players were.
As to Orange County, it was largely open land and orange orchards, not the conservative bastion it became a decade or two ago (and it is turning left fast with the influx of visitors from our southern border). San Diego was largely conservative and has been moving more moderate as the rest of the country seems to be going. There were lots of conservatives moving "over the hill" to the San Fernando Valley, the area that now houses the Ronald Reagan Library. Unfortunately, that has now also become the porn capitol of the country so it is also turning left.
In the 1940s, you had the infiltration of the Communist Party. They seemed to move into a few key areas: Santa Monica, West Los Angeles/Westwood, and downtown Los Angeles (around what is now Cesar Chavez Blvd.). While they looked for employment in "Hollywood," they didn't necessarily live there. But they were also out in the suburban areas, running camps in places like Redlands (appropriate name, doncha think?).
Given all that, I think it is hard to label cities as you have done. You are right that Reagan Conservatives are not to be found in mass in any specific city, but they are still there.
He could have demonstrated some character. A conservative philosophy along with consistent conservative principles. If Reagan could do it against the likes of Jerry Brown’s father, then Wilson could have possible shown the same type of leadership. He simply chose not to and I resent it!!!
JIM OBERWEIS (REP) 2414 55.79%
BILL FOSTER (DEM) 1913 44.21%
Bill Foster won district wide thanks to the Hispanic vote in Aurora. If the rest of the district had followed the beliefs of Reagan's hometown, Foster would be back at Fermi Lab splitting atoms. That district has been Republican for decades (remember, it was Dennis Hastert's district for years, and Republican long before that) until Foster won it -- and he never came close to winning Lee County where Reagan hailed from. And the ONLY reason Foster did so well is that GOP ran four-time loser Jim Oberweis, while ANY other Republican would have won have that district handily. Had Chris Lauzen (the Tom McClintock of Illinois) been the nominee, I doubt Foster would have gotten 30% in Lee County. Those Foster voters were mostly anti-Oberweis protest votes and not because they agreed with his philosophy.
Calling Ronald Reagan's hometown liberal and saying they tried to indoctrinate him to liberalism shows your extreme ignorance of Illinois politics. It's quite an insult to the good people of Dixon as well. I personally know a great conservative activist from Lee County and every time I go there I see nothing but conservatives. It would be like me coming into a California message board and trying to argue that Fresno, the home of FreeRepublic, is filled with socialist Democrats.
If Bel Air and Pacific Palisades had a good number of conservatives when Reagan lived there, they certainly don't today. All they elect in commununist liberals (I checked). Not even a Republican winning a fluke. Certainly nothing in common with Reagan's values And Reagan's time in Bel Air is fairly recent -- he lived there the entire time he left the presidency, from 1989-2004. Nancy Reagan still lives there to this day (though she's softened her conservatism and is now pro-embroyic stem cell funding, maybe her liberal neighbors have been influencing her). And, of course, Nancy's family also hails from Illinois and have ALWAYS been conservative. Nancy's stepfather (the man who raised her) was Dr. Loyal Davis, a neurosurgeon from Galesburg, Illinois who was well known as a staunch conservative activist. (see http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004864/bio ) Maybe Nancy's liberal neighbors in Bel Air have gotten to her. She should come back to Galesberg, which had been staunchly conservative Republican since the Republican Party existed.
Perhaps you're just jealous that the places Reagan lived in California want nothing to do with Reaganism today. You have to go to Simi Valley if you want to learn about Reagan's values in California. It's the places in Illinois that Reagan called home that are keeping the spirit of Reaganism alive (and yes there are still many "Reagan cousins" living in Illinois to this day).
Not my fault that the places Reagan lived in California want nothing to do with him now. There's are places that promotes Reagan's vision for America and promote themselves as "The Hometown of Ronald Reagan" -- but not one of those places is in California.
Come visit the Reagan Museum and Reagan Peace Garden in the conservative Eureka, you might learn something.
Two comments (okay, three).
Overall, I think you are trying to paint cities with too broad a brush. You cannot paint most neighborhoods as liberal or conservative in So California urban areas. They are a mix, with the exception of places like West Hollywood and a few others.
California is going through dramatic changes. What is true today is different than it was a decade ago and vastly different than 2 decades ago. We are 1-2 generations away from Ronald Reagan already. What was true then, is not true today.
As to Republicans winning elections in places like Los Angeles, you have to have a party willing to actually compete. From what I’ve seen, the PTB are perfectly happy to leave it under Dem control as they don’t even put up candidates in most races. When they do, they are of the very liberal (or corrupt) variety. jmho
Reagan lived in Dixon, Illinois from age 9 to age 21 (1920-1932) -- he certainly remembered it fondly and it had a significant influence in his life (as did his college life -- not wonder he came back to Eureka to give many now legendary speeches during his presidency!) Read his biographies -- he considered his Dixon years among the "happiest time in his life" and used to sneak Illinois references into his movie scripts! Dixon in the 1920s was a very conservative and traditional town, and still is today. Reagan left Dixon in 1932. That's around the time there was another big lurch to left in this country -- the FDR-Truman depression era (1933-1947) where the Democrats won everything. Reagan was a Dem in the 30s and 40s (when he worked as a radio announced in Iowa and then got his start as a movie actor in Hollywood), as was most of the country.
There are very few big cities in America with a conservative majority. It's hard to find any place with a population over 200,000 that's reliably conservative (even the exceptions to the rule, like Salt Lake City, tend to be less conservative than the rural areas and nearby suburbs). So not surprisingly, Reagan's hometown of 15,000 people would be more conservative than most big cities in California like L.A.
Mojave shouldn't be ticked off at me for point this out, he should be ticked off at those places in California that Reagan called home for completely divorcing themselves from Reaganism. Chicago might be a corrupt socialist hellhole, but the people of downstate Illinois are very PROUD of the fact Reagan lived among them, and work hard to keep his legacy alive. And Mojave insults them for that? Dixon gets nearly all its tourism from promoting Ronald Reagan's (along with Abraham Lincoln's) life and vision. Hollywood gets 10X more tourism, but treats Reagan like one of their red-headed stepchildren.
Sure, I understand California had a significant influence on Reagan's life and conservative values, and gave him the opportunity to rise to power, but Sacramento could care less about its adopted son today. At least you got to give the liberal Democrats in Illinois credit for constantly trying to cash in on our adopted son, Abraham Lincoln, and tie him to Illinois instead of Indiana (where he grew up) and Kentucky (where he was born) (even if they'd like to pretend Lincoln was a liberal Democrat).
If Mojave wants California to be known as the land of Reagan, then it's up to those places in California where Reagan rose to fame to keep his legacy alive. The rest of the country has heard of Bel-air, and it has a reputation. Bel-air is known as an elitist, gated community that might be home to a handful extremely wealthy Republicans (and mostly socialist Democrats), but it certainly does not represent middle America the way Dixon does. This is not an insult to California -- there are plenty of traditional, small-town conservative enclaves in California. Those the places fighting for Reaganism. And yes I think Nancy staying in limosine liberal Bel-Air all this time had softened the conservative values she grew up with in downstate Illinois.
Foster took 44.21% in "conservative" Dixon. Fascinating.
Bill Foster won district wide thanks to the Hispanic vote in Aurora.
Now who does that remind me of? Wasn't there some Congressman named Dornan that you were laughing about earlier.
Calling Ronald Reagan's hometown liberal and saying they tried to indoctrinate him to liberalism shows your extreme ignorance of Illinois politics.
Ronald Reagan, when he lived in Dixon, was a liberal Democrat. He didn't find conservative principles until he became a Californian.
If Bel Air and Pacific Palisades had a good number of conservatives when Reagan lived there, they certainly don't today.
And Ronald Reagan isn't there today either. But the spirit of his southern California born conservatism lives on, even though Dixon's congressional representative is a Pelosi puppet diametrically opposed to President Reagan's beliefs.
You have to go to Simi Valley if you want to learn about Reagan's values in California.
That's where the Reagan library is. Not Obamaland.
If you're gonna talk about me, do me the courtesy of ping.
I'm not ticked off, I'm laughing at your dancing.
Dixon = Liberal Democrat Reagan.
California = Conservative Republican Reagan.
Nancy's gone soft lately, thanks to the influence of her liberal Bel-air neighbors. Needs to get back to conservative Galesberg, Illinois where the Davis family is from. Those were the days when they were hard core conservatives.
Not sure how Reagan managed to vote "liberal Democrat" in Dixon, since he wasn't old enough to vote yet. You have any evidence that Reagan was involved in "liberal" causes back in the 1920s, please feel free to share it with us. "Liberal Democrat Reagan" the FDR supporter was during the 30s and 40s, after he had left Dixon, and while he was living in California starting in 1937. Then Arizonian Barry Goldwater helped him see the light (along with the folks at General Electric)
Interesting how you continually ignore that Dixon DID NOT VOTE FOR BILL FOSTER. Ohhh but 44% of the them did, whoopie-do. At least it's not 80% voting for the likes of Henry Waxman like Reagan's neighbors did back in the 1990s when he was STILL living there. It will be a cold day in hell before you get 80% of Dixonites to vote for ANY Democrat.
Mojave, the places Reagan lived in California want nothing to do with Reaganism or care to be associated with the man one bit. You can spin it all you want, that's the bottom line. Cry me a river. You should be insulting those marxists who have turned the back on their famous son and not the good people of Dixon working to keep Reagan's legacy alive everyday (by electing good Reaganites to the Illinois General Assembly and voting AGAINST the likes of Bill Foster). Read any news article about the town, they are very open and very proud to be associated with Reagan, unlike the liberal Hollyweird crowd that wants to pretend he never existed. But go on insulting Dixonites, just don't expect anyone to come to Reagan's "hometown" in California to learn anything about Reaganism. Not one place Reagan lived in California wants anything to do with the man. We'll be glad to take your tourists looking to learn about the life of Ronald Reagan.
Sure, they can go visit the Museum in Simi Valley, and learn about Reagan, but that's like learning about the Aztec Empire by visiting the Natural History of Museum of Chicago. Glad to see the conservative folks of Simi Valley are keeping Reagan's legacy when he never lived anywhere near them. Fortunately for America, there is one town in America where you can learn about Reaganism from people who actually KNEW the man, and that's Eureka, Illinois, not in Pelosiland.
Los Angeles County, California - U.S. Congressional Vote, 30th District
Waxman (D) 71%
Jones (R) 27%
55% vs. 27%! Wow. Impressive. Reagan's adopted hometown is such a shining example of conservativism, unlike the "liberals" he grew up with in Dixon!!! I'm sure Ronnie would be sooo proud of what happened to his California neighbors. LMAO!!!
So how does trying to smear Nancy Reagan advance your argument? You're grasping at straws.
Dixon = Liberal Democrat Reagan.
California = Conservative Republican Reagan.
That's one heck of a big Congressional district. I had no idea the 30th District had 10 million people in it.
And "conservative Republican Reagan" didn't show up until 1962. Therefore, from 1937-1962, California = "liberal Democrat Reagan" So your premise that hanging out with Californians caused him to morph from liberal Democrat to conservative Republican is flawed. Certainly didn't work the first 20 years he was there. I stand by my remarks that being introduced to Goldwaterism and General Electric made him conservative -- NOT hanging around Hollyweird (certainly hasn't helped Arnold, has it?).
The section of L.A. county in the 30th District (which includes most of the neighborhoods Reagan called home in California) gave 71% of its votes to a socialist RAT of course. I doubt anyone will interpret the election results from "L.A. county" to assume that means all of the 30th is in L.A. county. Just as the section of Lee County in the 14th District gave 55% of its votes to the conservative Republican candidate for Congress (would have been over 60% if the GOP hadn't run a terrible candidate)
You're accusing me of grasping at straws? Look at how you harp on about the LONE Democrat who managed to win in the region Reagan was from (conveniently ignoring the hundreds of other times the Democrats were defeated by conservative Republicans there), ignoring the fact Reagan's hometown did not support that Democrat, ignoring the fact he only won because the GOP put up the worst candidate they could, AND ignoring the dozens of Reagan Republicans they continue to elect on a regular basis (as opposed to Reagan's "home" in California which hasn't elected a single conservative Republican in decades). What's next, are you going to point to the obscure "moderate sounding" RAT State Senator that Monmouth, Illinois elected in 2004? I proved long ago on this thread that the places in Illinois that Reagan lived in are far more welcoming to conservatives than the places in California he lived, and you managed to locate ONE Democrat in the district to paint them as liberal. What a joke. ONE liberal managed to win in Wyoming too, that doesn't make the state liberal.
Do you deny that Nancy Reagan had gotten squishy since moving to liberal Bel-air? That's not on an attack on Ms. Reagan, simply an observation that she's pro taxpayer funded embryonic stem cell research, something her husband would have supported.
I don't see why you feel the need to defend the liberal parts of California Reagan lived in simply because they're "fellow Californians". Just face it. Reagan's adopted hometowns are now far removed from Reagan's values. They are full of limousine liberals. You don't see me trying to argue Chicago was a hotbed of conservatism activism simply because Reagan lived there when he was two years old.
And of course if those leftist communities had acted like Dixon and given 55% of their votes to Republicans (in spite the rest of the district voting Democrat), I'd be more than happy to admit I was wrong.
You can try to dig up any dirt on Reagan being "liberal" in the 1920s if really feel the need to keep trashing fellow conservatives in Dixon. The relevant question is when to comes to the people who knew him best, WHO is carrying the torch for Reaganism TODAY?
Reagan's Illinois communities = support his values
Reagan's California communities = oppose his values
