MANAMA, Bahrain — The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet says two of its vessels — a submarine and an amphibious ship — collided in the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and the Arabian peninsula early Friday.

The military says in a statement that the collision occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time on Friday (5 p.m. EDT, Thursday).

The USS Hartford, a submarine, collided with an amphibious ship, the USS New Orleans.

According to the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, 15 soldiers aboard the Hartford were slightly injured but able to return to duty. No injuries were reported aboard the New Orleans.

“Why not cough up a few bucks to send your family to a Power Boat Squadron class - maybe one of them will save your or someone elses life.”

I have, my family have also all grew up on boats and while I appreciate what you are saying we are both discussing the different side of the same coil.

According to the original linked article, the submarine was running submerged at the time of the collision (perhaps the article has been updated since the original post):

The USS Hartford, a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, was fully submerged Friday when it collided with the transport ship the USS New Orleans, according to a Navy official in the 5th Fleet.

The New Orleans' fuel tank was ruptured in the crash, causing a spill of 25,000 gallons (90,000 litres) of diesel.

Remember when oil spills were given in barrels? It seems to me that the press wants to use smaller units of measure to make the spill seem larger.

595 barrels

25,000 gallons

90,000 liters

Why not keep going?

3,200,000 ounces

25,600,000 drams

90,000,000 ml

Any chance there is a device that interferes with a ships radar systems?

There are plenty of devices that interfere with ships' radar. It's called ECM (Electronic Counter Measures). But it is very obvious when they are being used.

That said, when a submerged submarine strikes a surface ship, radar performance was not a factor.

I think I saw that the term soldier had been changed, but I remembered reading about the rapid deployment program, so it was possible that soldiers/special forces could have been aboard. This is about the UK program http://navy-matters.beedall.com/jrrf.htm they seem to be a little more free with their information.

90,000,000 ml of toxic chemically treated oil spilled from the US warship into the narrow straights causing unrepeatable damage the the delicate ecosystem.

is that better?

Or

100 sailors go down on the sub, and 50 couples come up.

or

100 sailors go down on the sub, and 49 couples and 2 very nervous men.

You bring up a good point. Where I grew up for part A of my childhood, it was a hoagie. For part B, it was a grinder. First time we ever heard “grinder” my siblings and I looked at each other with those adolescent WTF looks on our faces. Priceless.

Scuttlebutt from some Navy friends is that the subs use larger ships for cover when moving through the Straits. Someone zigged when they should of zagged. The Iranians have the place wired 9 ways from Sunday with listening devices. I think a 688 would be impossible to find if it was fifty feet under a large ship.

When did they start putting soldiers on submarines?

However unlikely, the “journalist” may have been referring to the USMC security detachment. Then again, probably not.

I was on the USS Mars (AFS 1) when it collided with USS Cook (FF 1083) in 1979.

Really? Did you know a ET3 Prue?

Philly. As for grinder, I haven't a clue. Hoagie = Philly, Hero = NY, Po Boy = New Orleans.

However, I think I've stumbled upon a paradox here. Per the USN, the New Orleans is a surface ship. However, New Orleans = Po Boy = Hoagie = Submarine. And, submarine = boat. Oh, I'm so confused...

“There’s a disturbing trend going on, with this the third or fourth such accident I’ve seen in recent months. What’s going on with shiphandling and basic seamanship in the USN these days”

The USS Hartford ran aground in 2003, http://navysite.de/ssn/ssn768.htm ,with significant damage so this is it’s second problem.

What makes this highly unusual is the fact a Japanese fishing boat wasn’t involved.
