I have, my family have also all grew up on boats and while I appreciate what you are saying we are both discussing the different side of the same coil.
The USS Hartford, a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, was fully submerged Friday when it collided with the transport ship the USS New Orleans, according to a Navy official in the 5th Fleet.

Any chance there is a device that interferes with a ships radar systems?
There are plenty of devices that interfere with ships' radar. It's called ECM (Electronic Counter Measures). But it is very obvious when they are being used.
That said, when a submerged submarine strikes a surface ship, radar performance was not a factor.
I think I saw that the term soldier had been changed, but I remembered reading about the rapid deployment program, so it was possible that soldiers/special forces could have been aboard. You bring up a good point. Where I grew up for part A of my childhood, it was a hoagie. For part B, it was a grinder. First time we ever heard “grinder” my siblings and I looked at each other with those adolescent WTF looks on our faces. Priceless.
Scuttlebutt from some Navy friends is that the subs use larger ships for cover when moving through the Straits. Someone zigged when they should of zagged. The Iranians have the place wired 9 ways from Sunday with listening devices. I think a 688 would be impossible to find if it was fifty feet under a large ship.
However unlikely, the “journalist” may have been referring to the USMC security detachment. Then again, probably not.

Philly. As for grinder, I haven't a clue. Hoagie = Philly, Hero = NY, Po Boy = New Orleans.
However, I think I've stumbled upon a paradox here. Per the USN, the New Orleans is a surface ship. However, New Orleans = Po Boy = Hoagie = Submarine. And, submarine = boat. Oh, I'm so confused...

The USS Hartford ran aground in 2003, http://navysite.de/ssn/ssn768.htm ,with significant damage so this is it’s second problem.
What makes this highly unusual is the fact a Japanese fishing boat wasn’t involved.
Darn it, the New Orleans should have picked up that sub with it's fathometer...[grin/sarcasm]
