Perdue plan could hit prisons

Gov. Beverly Perdue has proposed cutting prison beds.

To help deal with the state's budget crisis, Perdue this week proposed closing five prisons, a prison hospital and a halfway house for women that are inefficient.

The cuts would save $25 million over the next two years, but they would also eliminate space for 1,031 inmates at a time when the system could see an additional 2,300 inmates.

Prison officials say they'll double up cells and put beds in day rooms. But the closures will put a crunch on a system with 40,644 inmates, slightly above capacity.

Some legislators are calling for reducing sentences, but Perdue said she's not ready.

"I would like a discussion some time about what other states are doing," she said. "I know after a decade there needs to be a very open public discussion about whether we invest more in community placement and education opportunities." (N&O)

But think about how much better our school kids will perform because of yet another pay raise she is giving them.

... and a halfway house for women that are inefficient ...

But where will laid-off government employees live, then?

Send them to Guantánamo Bay, they’ll be treated better and eat better.

a halfway house for women that are inefficient

OMG, they're now putting inefficient women in halfway houses? 0bama really IS a fascist.

Seriously, this gaffe is a sure sign that the editors have been some of the first to go in the MSM layoff bloodbaths. I'm seeing more and more of these in "professionally written" articles.

I smell an early release program coming next to take care of prison over crowding. I heading out to get more 9mm ammo, just in case she passes a law preventing me from buying ammo.

I think it might be time for a prison lottery.

The really scary thing about this is that they basically turn away everyone who isn't a mass murderer as it is. In the Charlotte area, especially, the little thugs have been released time after time after time, allowing them all to 'bloom' into violent felons.

Phase 1. Execute all death row inmates at sundown tomorrow.

Phase 2. Contract with Ft Bragg NC logistics personnel for 4,000 GP Medium Tents and 500 miles of concertina wire.

Phase 3. Build Tent cities in remote areas with triple stranded concertina wire and guard towers every 100 meters.

Phase 4. Issue shovels and sledge hammers to all prisoners;

Phase 5. Conduct hard labor operations 24/7.

Phase 6. Issue orders that escapes will be shot on sight.

Phase 7. After two years prison population will decline.

Phase 8. Run for reelection

LOL! I saw Gov Perdue and thought of Sonny Perdue. When I read the name ‘Beverly’ and the word ‘she,’ I thought I entered an alternate universe.

The only thing that grow faster than the list of released criminals in North Carolina is the list of victims from their crimes.
