Obamas Prepare to Plant White House Vegetable Garden By MARIAN BURROS

WASHINGTON — On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.

While the organic garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and formal dinners, its most important role, Mrs. Obama said, will be to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern.

In an interview in her office, Mrs. Obama said, “My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.”

Twenty-three fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington will help her dig up the soil for the 1,100-square-foot plot in a spot visible to passers-by on E Street. (It’s just below the Obama girls’ swing set.) Students from the school, which has had a garden since 2001, will also help plant, harvest and cook the vegetables, berries and herbs.

Almost the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said laughing. “Now Grandma, my mom, I don’t know.” Her mother, she said, would probably sit back and say: “Isn’t that lovely. You missed a spot.”

Hey!, I've never picked cotton, but my mother did, and my father did...and my great-grandfather killed a man with a single-tree wagon harness for taking a (pistol) shot at him in front of a cotton gin in Bowie, Tex back in 1914.

Careful now...

First truly ‘American’ action I’ve seen from this White House. Of course, they are counting on using this as a smokescreen to their ‘anti-American’ actions.

"You’re kidding, right?"

Why would I be kidding? There's plenty of reasons to criticize them. Legitimate reasons. This isn't one of them. It just makes the ones doing it look petty, mean and stupid. You might want to try leaving that to the other side.

Well..it's the thought that counts....BUT!

Anyone knows you can't grow a garden if you plant it in a part of the country where-

THE SUN DON'T SHINE!!!

Oh man what hypocrites. Eating $100 bucks a pound beef with the tomatoes you grew in the garden, like the executive branch of the United Stated Government has time to garden. Already he is complaining he is "tired". Sheesh, everything with these people is for show, while with Palin it is for real. How much you want to bet this will be "her" first garden. How much you want to bet she never touches dirt. And what ever will they do if the experience their first *gasp* blister?!

Yep, our politicians have Change in mind for us. Victory gardens in the depression.

I have no problem with this either and see a lot of good coming from it.

Next, she’ll put an old sofa on the front porch, and the family can sit around drinking quarts of Colt 45.

What about the vicious racism - serious stuff - that 0bama listened to for almost 20 years in Jeremiah Wright’s Church of Hate Whitey?

People here are joking - maybe some in poor taste - but it is merely a token reaction to the evil incarnate that is 0bama. 0bama hates white people and subscribes to the general NOI hate whitey crap spewed by Wright, that he learned from Farrakhan. How do I know this? Because he sat and listened to Wright Sunday after Sunday for almost 2 decades, married his wife there and had his children “christened” there (or was it baptized). No sane or rational person could listen to the mad dog froth of vile race hatred from Wright for years and years.

If you hate racism, your anger is being directed in the wrong direction.

No problem with a show garden that she pretends to work in for 15 minutes as a photo op?

You seriously think she or any of them will actually put real time into this garden? Surely you can’t believe that. First of all, they don’t have callouses on their hands and have never held or used tools. For a start!

You could be right about this. Be that as it may, small vegetable gardens are sprouting up in record numbers these days. The vegetables I mentioned are appropriate for early spring weather.

You’re sick in the head.

This is not the friendly banter of FRiends.

did I just sign up for a banning?

It's not clear why you signed up. You seem unhappy about it. Maybe you're not on the right boards? Only you can answer.

Just remember, we are FRiends here. Conservatives are polite. We debate. We don't fight.

Eh, I’d like to give credit, but I am not falling for it. Maybe you better look at the other WH garden thread—she did not use pitch forks or rototiller (which is what is needed to really ready a garden plot) and she scheduled this when HER kids were at school yet was fine having a bunch of DC kids come out and participate. Given DC test scores, maybe they should stay in school and work on 3Rs. Of course it is in view for all to see—even tho her state dinners include $100/lb imported Wagyu beef and seafood. She did not garden in Chicago...even tho there was a side yard for a garden. It is nothing more than a photo=opp IMHO.

That said, good luck with your garden—I am starting my seedlings inside this week. BTW, where did you get your heirloom seeds?

Hmm - I’m sick in the head, but 0bama is fine, although he attended a “hate whitey” “church” for almost 20 years? And it wasn’t in (bad taste) jest? But for real? Virulent, insane, psychotic hatred for whites that he listened to along with Mrs. Black Widow Spider for almost 20 years? And hung out with the likes of Farrakhan? And you’re dumping of Freepers for having some bad taste jokes?

Have you heard any black “comedians” lately?

Tell me, just what do you think of Jeremiah Wright’s philosophy, that 0bama listened to with nary a complaint for almost 20 years? Hmm?
