Earth Hour is taking place on Saturday, March 28 between 8:30 and 9:30pm (your local time). Sponsored by the World Wildlife Federation, it's a chance for people from around the world (1 BILLION people if they reach their goal) to vote for Earth over global warming. During the last two Earth Hours, entire cities went black, including Sydney, Australia and San Francisco, CA. This year, be a part of the momentous occasion and turn it into a little getaway in your own home.
Not only does Earth Hour sound like an easy way to get involved in the fight against global warming, it also sounds like an excellent excuse for a staycation! Instead of turning the lights off for one hour, turn the lights off all night. Gather candles, flashlights, etc. to luminate your home. Make snacks and invite people over for a night of glowing fun with friends. Go online to follow Earth Hour happenings around the world at www.earthhour.org. If you're into yoga or meditation, having the lights off on a random Saturday night might be the perfect time to engage in some relaxation techniques.
Before Earth Hour, you could take the day to get involved in your community, whether it's picking up trash in your neighborhood, visiting a museum of natural history, or just spending time outside getting your yard ready for spring. I'm going to use it as an excuse to recycle a bunch of electronics that I no longer use- mp3 players, cell phones, VCRs- my local recycling center will take them all! Whatever you do, don't forget to shut your lights out between 8:30pm and 9:30pm (your local time).
Here is a video on the history of Earth Hour (click picture):
Will have every light in the house on hehe...
Yes, because no energy is used in the production or use of candles and flashlights.
Remind me next year that the Christmas lights don't come down until after March.
I plan to exceed the redline on my power meter by an exponent factor of 100 to the 10th power. I would say at least more than 4.2 trillion rpms....
I’m turning everything up to “11”
I’ve already got the extension cords and flood lights out to put on every tree in the yard.......
Wow well don’t have that wattage but will be our best...
F- This.
Morons.
I’ll burn tires as I fire up the Arc Welder.
Heater will be up to 80 degrees and every light in my house will be on.
get drunk and burn the house down, then go apply for a mortgage, good luck
What kind of life do these people live? Most people sleep at night and do turn out their lights.
Great. They’ve picked an hour when most businesses are closed and will already have most, if not all, of their lights off.
These guys all have the same idea.
LOL - I just had to laugh at their suggestion to turn off the lights all night — and then POWER UP your COMPUTER (which takes more electricity than a single light bulb) and check out what others are doing? What’s the point if you’re using energy to be online reporting what your dark house looks like! ROFL
Do these people actually read their suggestions before publishing them??? Too funny.
FYI - here’s some quick stats to prove my point:
Kilowatt usage based on 4 hours - the approx. length of time suggested above for your “dark party” [The calculator I used determines monthly cost so I put in that these things were only going to be used for 1 day a month]
1 100-watt light bulb used for 4 hours —
USAGE: .4 kWh
Average Cost: $.05
1 “150” Home Computer (Computer + 17” LCD Monitor) used for 4 hours (to check out earthday.org) —
Usage: .6 kWh
Average Cost: $.07
