I am a Catholic

Such a thoughtful article warrants a response that is equally thoughtful:

Liar, liar, pants of fire.

Another bonehead academic trying to sell a book full of crap. You read awhile and you uncover this gem:

As I detail in my latest book, "Grand Theft Jesus: The Hijacking of Religion in America" (Crown), the cardinal sin of the Catholic Church -- a literally deadly sin, if ever there was one -- is its opposition to birth control.

Uh huh. I'm not even sure where to begin on that one.

This guy is a professor at Millsaps College, a Methodist institution.

I guess the Methodists keep him around as a purported "Catholic" to show off to the neighbors. "See how ecumenical we are -- but this guy doesn't actually question any of our doctrines or (more importantly) our political positions."

Ecce homo.

Robert S. McElvaine

I think the man needs some emails. Please be polite but firm.

I think he would be a lot happier in the Episcopal church or maybe with the Unitarians.

May God grant Pope Benedict a very long and healthy life!

Pope Benedict is meeting with those of the Muslim faith today.

Why?

Dear Washington Post Editors:

Bad news for you: McElvaine is not Catholic. I am. He makes your newspaper look stupider than it already does. That doesn’t bother me, but you might not like everyone laughing at you.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, etc.

Sincerely,

Judith Anne

As you can see HERE, McElvaine is the chairman of the history department at Millsaps. You can contact him directly via e-mail by clicking HERE, or you can phone him direct at (601) 974 -1291.

While you are at it, you might as well contact his boss, Dr. Francis Lucas by clicking HERE, or you can phone her at 800.352.1050. My guess, she hasn't yet read the editorial -- and the school might even have a code of professional conduct. You might want to ask.

Finally, you might consider contacting some of their Board of Trustees. You can find a list HERE.

Happy hunting.

>>I am a Catholic and the idea that such a man is God’s spokesperson on earth is absurd to me. <<

No sir, what is absurd is that you and your like-minded individuals, took over my church and destroyed it.

No sir, what is absurd is that you have replaced it with a LIB, PC institution that believes i nothing save your own beliefs.

No sir, what is absurd is that you consider yourself a Catholic.

The jack ass that wrote that tripe should be the one that is impeached! Let the excommunication proceedings begin.

Aren’t there many americans who should be excommunicated? They should start their own church and move on.

Exactly.

I was raised and married in the Roman Catholic church. Unfortunately, when we moved, we found the catholic churches near us were "americanized" versions of the church, not traditional Roman Catholic. We now attend a Baptist church near us, which is as close to the traditional Catholic church as we could get. While the service is slightly different, the doctrine - the biblical principles - are hardline traditional.

Nonetheless, I have never lost my support for the Catholic church and vehemently defend her against all slings and arrows. I have a "ZERO TOLERANCE" policy against those who wish to change her, since she IS the rock upon which Christ built His following here on earth.

The reason so many nonbelievers are obsessed with her is because she stands solidly on biblical principles; the current Pope is a solid fundamentalist on biblical teachings (an excellent thing, in my opinion). The bible speaks candidly of a time when we (Christians) will be as strangers in our own land, villified and mocked by those who do not believe.

We are there.

Dear RU88:

We were the protector of morals, at one time. But then some women got the bright idea that to be equal to men, we had to step down from our pedastals and into the gutter.

Most of the young women of today have no idea what it's like to behave like ladies and those who do are ridiculed for it.

Women used to be the vanguards of what was decent in a civilized society. When we abdicated that position, we opened the doors to depravity.
